v.slow CPU?

OS: Windows XP Home SP1
CPU/Ram: 1.8GHz P4 Celeron, 256MB
Comment:

I recently ran a prog called FreshDiagnose to see if the problems I was having (original problem was a very low framerate in Half-Life and it's mods) was due to hardware. The tests show me that my CPU might not be as healthy as I (or Valve!) would like. I've put the results in below.

I have a stock HP Pavilion 522n
(specs at: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=bph07567&locale=en_US&taskId=110&prodSeriesId=70989&prodTypeId=12454 )

My computer APPEARS to be virus, worm and trojan free.

FreshDiagnose rated my processor against...
1: Intel Celeron 700 MHz
2: AMD Duron 800 MHz
3: AMD Thunderbird 850
4: Intel Pentium IV 1.6 GHz
My processor: Intel Pentium 4 Celeron 1.8GHz

The results of my processor diagnostic came out as (1-4=reference CPUs):

MWIPS Comparison:
1: 315
2: 831
3: 945
4: 1059
Me: 72

MDIPS Comparison:
1: 1943
2: 2248
3: 2394
4: 3083
Me: 881

Speed Comparison:
1: 703
2: 798
3: 851
4: 1595
Me: 1793

Can anyone tell me if my P4 Celeron 1.8 should have results like this (particularly in reference to the P4 1.6GHz (CPU#4, above))? And if there appears to be a problem, can anyone throw me any bones? (Or point out the right tree to bark up)?

I'd really appreciate any help. If you require anymore info, just ask :D

Those ratings dont make sense. All you have to really worry about is MIPS a second and how many MFLOPS your FPU puts out. Download sissoft sandra and re-run it.

Thanks Outlander. I have no idea how CPU ratings work - my results were originally in the form of graphs and I just noted the figures. I'll d/l Sandra, but could someone please post what my MIPS and MFLOPS is expected to be around?

Thanks

Redid benchmarks with Sisoft Sandra. I believe the closest comparison machine I tested against was a 1.7GHz Celeron (mine is 1.8 Celeron and claims to run at 1.79GHz).

Results:
1.7: 4180MIPS
1.8 (My PC): 978MIPS

1.7: 1257/2298 MFLOPS
1.8 (My PC): 288/525MFLOPS

This doesn't look right to me. Any suggestions or questions? Could it be the CPU? Memory? An undetected virus stealing resources? I'll look into any suggestions people have - I want to understand it, as well as fix it!

Thanks again.

yeah that's def not right

You're cpu may be overheating, your symptoms are indicative of this, at least for now, amoung other things

I'd remove the heatsink from the cpu, clean with alcohol, apply new thermal grease, and reinstall

Also XP is a memory hog, and 256 IMO is too small. Try at least another 256, but the more the merrier. Look in the manual for the largest supported size and go with what your budget can afford

Thanks Justin. Is lighter fluid a viable alternative to the alcohol (just asking because it is in many other cleaning applications) and what is thermal grease? I'm off to Google. Thanks for the help...

Before you do anything, check your current setup CPU speed from Sandra.

Before you do anything, check CPU speed, temps and Vcore from Sandra.

OK - I didn't get those posts before I tried anything. Luckily I had no alcohol or grease, so I simply opened up my case and got rid of a lot of dust from around the CPU fan (over the heatsink) and from the rear fan. Boot seemed a little quicker, but the MIPS and MFLOPS seem the same as above.

Sandra tells me:

Rated Speed/FSB: 1800MHz/4x100MHz
Multiplier: 18/1x
Temp before dust removal: 38C/100F
Temp after dust removal: 32C/89F
CPU Core Power: 66W (estimate)
I didn't notice Vcore - where do I look?
And what should these figures suggest to me?

Sorry - I'm quite a noob with hardware...

If you've got a decent internet connection, try downloading Knoppix and benchmarking (I don't know how, though - definitely a Linux n00b) with it.

Vcore is CPU Voltage, you could find it under "CPU&BIOS information" <Sensors>.

At least Sandra identifies the correct CPU speed. Now, run burn-in test for at least 10 continuous run with temp sensors reporting.

After doing some more testing it seems I could benefit from a sound card, graphics card and more memory, but that's no big surprise. Is there anything I can do software-wise or tweak-wise that can help me? Intel Accelerator any good? And can someone give me a direct link for the latest Intel 845G/GL drivers? I updated, but I'm not certain I've got the right ones. I've searched Intel, Google, etc. and can't figure out which driver's for me.

My system specs are at:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=bph07567&locale=en_US&taskId=110&prodSeriesId=70989&prodTypeId=12454

Sorry for being crap and persistent - this has been driving me up the wall for a long time!

Thanks again to all who've helped me this far - I am getting somewhere!

If you have Intel Chipset, you have to use Intel Accelerator. The chipset utlility should come with your motherboard setup or from HP.

Here is the Intel Chipset downloads. You would be able to install if you chipset is not Intel. In another word, it's hard to screw up.

I meant "you would not be able to stall the driver if your chipset is not Intel".

Thanks for the tip Andy. Hunted high and low but can't find anything referring to "tyher". I'm trawling through KB looking for 100% CPU usage problems, but no luck yet. I'll keep searching, but if anyone has any other ideas, I'd really appreciate anything you can throw at me...

Cheers,

BL
