If you were to choose between 80GB HDD, one WD, the other Maxtor, maxtor is ATA133/100 while WD is ATA 100 with 8MB buffer.

Please help i am confused, i realize ATA 133 is faster, but brand wise etc.. both carry 3 yr warranty, maxtor is $107, and WD is $114. Since $7 are not all that big of a deal, i just want the better one. specifications at the bottom.

MAXTOR Quiet Drive 80GB 7200RPM Model Specifications:
Size: 80 Gigabytes
Interface: IDE ULTRA ATA133/100
Seek time: 8ms
RPM:7200
Cache 2MB

or

WD WESTERN DIGITAL "SPECIAL EDITION" 80GB 7200RPM EIDE HARD DRIVE
Specifications:
Size: 80 Gigabytes
Interface: IDE ULTRA ATA100
Seek time: 8.9ms
RPM:7200
Cache 8MB

To be honest, I'd choose the Western Digital drive. If your motherboard doesn't support ATA133 then it won't run at that. For example, if you buy a ATA133 drive and your motherboard only supports ATA100 then it will only run at 100. Besides, I've had nothing but good experiences with WD drives and the support from the staff.

From what I’ve read, the 8MB cache means that the WDC HDD will outperform the Maxtor Drive. I think that the performance, however will be pretty similar.

If u fancy being different go 4 a Samsung i got 1 and it rocks never had any problems with it.

I use Western Digital harddrives exclusivly and the only time I had to RMA one is when a shiity power supply blew up.

Also you won't see any speed difference from ATA100 and ATA133. ATA133 is just imaginary

I have two 61 gig Maxtor ata100 5400 rpm AND two WD 60 gig ata100 5400 rpm hdds in my system. No problems with any of them.

I run 2 operating systems on my computer: win98se and Mandrake Linux 8.2 Powerpack Edition. I also like to spread things over several hdds, in case one dies. Won't lose everything that way (unless they all die at once).

I've worked with both but prefer Western Digital. Does your mobo support ATA133? Go with the 8mb buffer.

BTW, that price seems a bit steep...my local BestBuy had a Maxtor 80GB 7200rpm drive for $80 after rebate just last week! Check Pricewatch.com

I think the WD will perform slightly better all of my systems are IBM or maxtor . I cant compare the maxtor because it is 5400 rpm so it sucks. I have a new maxtor that is 7200 rpm and ata/133 I have yet to decide what to do with it add it as a slave or on another build as I have all but a mobo, cpu and cd-rw to complete another system that I dont really need. But from what I have read I would go with the WD
