For my new system I was looking at the volcano 12, but I've read since it's like 1.6 pounds, it's not good for you to move your computer a lot, and I plan on going to the occasional lanparty. For anybody who owns one, have you experienced any problems, or can anyone give me a suggestion on what kind of fan will cool my cpu decently.
I have a amd 2500+Mobile. I don't plan on doing any super ocing, but I would like a comfortable oc to around 2.4 ~ 2.5ghz
thanx

unless you are very weak and anemic (which you are not), my suggestion is that you should not worry about how heavy it is. it sounds like you are implying that it would be 'exausting' just to have a good heatsink with lots of copper in it. since you will only go to about one lan party a month or even less, it would be a waste not to get a volcano 12. and even if you do get it and go to the lan party, what is 1.6 pounds gonna do? make you get tired from carrying it? a heat sink is a heat sink. get it, its good and it will be good for your computer too.

and its not good to move your computer around alot is a myth. as long as you have everything secured and you dont use it as you do a basket ball, nothing should go wrong.

I installed the Thermaltake Polo 735 on my p4 2.8 and from what i can tell the polo and volcano 12 are relatively the same. I'm really impressed with it's performance so far, only problem is the noise these fans make at max rpm which is 5,500 i believe. You never really need to crank it that high though and i've oc to 3.2GHz. So yeah, like mr.X said, a heatsink is a heatsink and this one performs well, idling at about 38c and under load about 45c max over here. I don't even get sore arms carrying it to LANs :|

mr X,

The major concern with a heavy heatsink is the possiblity of it coming loose & damaging other components...especially in a box that's moved around a lot, like being dragged to a LAN party

fredrib,

How about an aluminum/copper hybrid?

this is a subject that really gets me madd!

people have had experiences where the retaining clips on their volcano 12 snapped off the plastic pieces on the ziff socket and the 1.6lb hunk of metal rattled around in their case taking out the video card, the motherboard, all their pci cards and whatever else

if you are concerned about this happening, then for god sake do not get one! i considered getting a volcano12 once and some very wise people, jam being one of them, convinced me not to

i even considered getting a volcano 11 one time but even that was too heavy for me(and not to carry, jeez who thought that he was worried about how heavy his computer was gonna be???)

point is that hs is about 4x heavier than what AMD reccomends meaning that it is about 2x heavier than i would feel safe about having in my computer

not only do you risk the damn thing breaking off, but you risk cracking your cpu core when you mount the hs
and those cores are not fragile, believe me, those cores are just fine until you start putting on 1 and a half pound hs on them

and they really do not perform that much better than anything else
i can oc my 2500 to 204fsb x 11 w/ vcore @1.675 and i idle at 37C and 49C under full load with the retail heatsink and 60mm fan!!!

am i getting the point across? all these heavy/risky expensive cpu coolers are not what you really need, what you really need is a safe reasonable performing hs
and if you're really into gaming you need a great video card
what is painfully obvious to one person might be just painful to the other

that's a good motherboard motherboard btw

and im sorry to say that i dont know anyone who has experienced a horror story like that but i have heard them before

my advice to you is to just get jam's budget special

it is a lot safer and quieter than that volcano12 not to mention a third of the price and best of all you wont have to worry

That board has the holes in it, i am using an slk900u that bolts on with the holes in my nf7-s, plus i am using a slk800 that has the clamps on my other machine. With those holes in your board i would get a 900u.

I shoulda waited to see some more of your reveiws, so it's already on it's way. Since my mobo has some holes, what would you think of me using some zip ties that would wrap around the hsf thus making it a little more secure. Or, i'm not sure on newegg's return policies so I'll have to look into that.
thanx

i suppose you could run a zip tie or two over the heatsink bottom and through the holes just in case it does break the clips if that's what you mean
