Subject: video editing P4 or CeleronOS: XP PROCPU/Ram: 2.0/512 |
Comment: Hi, I am into video and photo editing. I want to upgrade my motherboard and processor. I am not at all into gaming, so that is no factor in my decisions. I have seen two motherboard/cpu combos that I like: one has a Celeron running at 3.20, the other a P4 running at 2.8. Motherboards are both Biostar. I would appreciate some comparative comments on the the alternatives. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Reply: (edit)If you want to upgrade your motherboard and processor but want to use your DDR RAM go out and get a Socekt 939 Athlon 64 X2 4400+ and an nvidia nforce 4 ultra motherboard. Athlon 64 X2 4400+ for $250 bucks awesome preformance at an great price. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103546 ABIT KN8 Ultra Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra supports up to 8gig DDR memory for $88 bucks.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813127222 $338 bucks total which is a hell of a deal considering that the AMD Athlon X2 4400+ was going for almost twice much as it is going for now 2 weeks ago. Reply: (edit)I would say the Celeron D 3.2g is faster than P4 since the newer prescott core has 256kb L2 cache compared to 2.8 has 533Mhz FSB. If the 2.8 have 800FSB, then it is faster than the CL D 3.2g w/ 533FSB... Reply: (edit)If by video editing, you are including video encoding/transcoding. Go with the P4 as it has a larger L2 cache (usually 512kb or 1mb). I have a P4 with 512kb cache, and I encode a lot, the performance is great. Reply: (edit)P4's are better when it comes to celerons in editing when based on the same core. AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ OC 2.7ghz 2GB Dual Channel DDR 3200 Nvidia 7900GT SATA II 2x 200gig 7200rpm 16mb cache RAID-0 Gigabyte Nforce 4 SLI

Reply: (edit)But Celeron has a smaller cache. So why would you get one rather than a P4? "PARIAH"[British.By.Birth] P4 3.0 HT 800mhz FSB Asrock P4I65G M/B 1024mb DDR 400 80GB Diamond max9 SATA 160GB Diamond max10 SATA Club3D GeForce6600 256mb
