Hi guys

I just wanted to clear up something which I'm unsure about. Hope you can help.

I have an Intel Pentium 4 processor, socket 478. I am thinking about chaning my motherboard, seeing as my current one only supports AGP graphics cards. My current CPU is an Intel Pentium 4, socket 478.

I will be upgrading my CPU shortly after sorting out the rest of the hardware, but in the mean time, would I be able to use my current socket 478 processor in a mobo with a n LGA775 socket?

Apparently, Pentium 4 is compatible with that socket, but I just wanted to make sure.

Many thanks.

Why would you think a S478 CPU would fit in a S775 motherboard?

S478 CPUs fit in S478, S775 CPUs fit in S775, you can NOT interchange.

You're better off building a new system. 2gb of DDR2 ram is dirt cheap. Throw in a intel LGA775 965 motherboard with a Intel Pentuim Dual Core E2180 processor. You can get all of this for around 200 bucks if you on a budget, which would be a much better investment.

I know that different socket types are not interchangeable. It's just that the motherboard I want apparently supports Pentium 4, but it has a LGA775 socket.

Cobra_R:

The reason for changing the motherboard is indeed to eventually build a new computer. What I was hoping to do was set up this new mobo with a PCI-E graphics card, as well as all the other hardware I use, but wait for the price of multicore processors (specifically the Intel Core 2 Quad) to come down, while still being able to use my computer on my current processor while I wait.

I don't think you do. If you knew that, you wouldn't have asked the question.

"would I be able to use my current socket 478 processor in a mobo with a n LGA775 socket?"

Obviously you can't use it. Your P4 is made to fit in a socket 478, not an LGA775. It ain't rocket science...S478 CPUs fit in a socket 478, LGA775 CPUs fit in an LGA775 socket. The different socket names should have been a HUGE clue. It's like asking if Honda parts will fit on my Harley...afterall, they're both motorcycles. lol

So an AM2 CPU won't fit an AM3 socket then?

Before I saw the list of compatible processors for the board I want, I was certain that my 478 wouldn't fit an LGA774#5, but my CPU is a Pentium 4, and apparently the compatible processors for the board are:

Pentium 4, Pentium 4 Extreme Edition, Pentium Extreme Edition, Pentium D, Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Extreme, Core 2 Quad

That's different. AMD designed compatibility into their AM2, AM2+ & AM3.

If you wanna use a P4 in a LGA775 board, it has to be an LGA775 P4. I don't know why this is so difficult to understand?

Thanks. That's all I wanted to know. It was the name that caused the confusion. LGA775 supports P4, I have a P4 processor, so I wanted to see if it supported P4. Obviously it does, but not the 478 socket.

Been shopping around anyway and might actually wait for a more powerful Phenom, or wait for the price of Core 2 Quad to come down.
