Vcore 1 overheating!?

Specs: Windows XP
Just wondering if anyone can help me out here. I seem to be ok for surfing online but whenever I play a game my pc freezes after a short period. Speedfan says Vcore1 is overheating. The pc is a few years old now being a 2.8 athlon running on 2gd of ram and an Radeon X1650 pro AGP. I'll be updating mu set up soon but would just like to know if this problem can be fixed. (fresh paste has been applied & at an adequate amount)

"fresh paste has been applied & at an adequate amount"

That would mean just a tiny dab, no larger than a grain of rice, placed in the center of the CPU & not spread around like you're buttering a piece of toast, correct?

This is the correct way

This is the wrong way

"Speedfan says Vcore1 is overheating"

Vcore is the the CPU voltage, it has nothing to do with overheating.
