hello all
i had a word with a dell tech guy when he was installing a new motherboard for my machine, and asked him if it was possible to take out the intel 3.8ghz chip and put a dual core processor on this motherboard and he said that the board i have is a very new one and it should work no problem. he said he even tried it himself a lot of times before and worked ok. is this really possible or not. thanks

Honestly, you don't need any upgrades at this time and you shouldn't for a while.

Yes. The question is what kind of dual core processor can you put in it.

If the chipset is Intel and it's the 965 or 975BX then you can put a Core 2 duo and a Pentium D in it. If it's a Intel 945 or 975x chipset then you can only put a Pentium D in it.

But considering you have an nForce 4 motherboard, you aren't able to upgrade to the Core 2 Duo processor. The best you can do is a Pentium D 965EE.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ OC 2.7ghz
2GB Dual Channel DDR 3200
Nvidia 7900GT
SATA II 2x 300gig 7200rpm 16mb cache RAID-0
Gigabyte Nforce 4 SLI

thanks for the reply sabertooth.
i was just curious if it was possible.i notice when playing fear i cannot even get the game to run smothly on 1280/1024 its too slow. only seems best on 1024/768 you would think with dual 7800gtx 256mb cards it would run a bit higher than that i do know the game is power hungry. i was told that my score on 3dmark05 was low for this system 9206 score. thanks

Zeno,

You might want to use your monitor's optimal (pre-set) video ratings. I'm sure a few of them are even higher then 1280/1024. Check the manufactures web sight regarding your monitors optimal pre-sets. Your chip is faster then it needs to be to handle FEAR no problem, Same with your video card rig (even set to high res on all settings)

Happy Gaming

thanks salty. the highest the monitor will go is 1600/1200 85hz. well i still cant find anything wrong with the settings ive opened the case of the machine and all power dongles are connected to the video cards i always felt that something was not right with the speed on games while highering the resolution. as well when iuse anything more than 2xAA never mind slix8 there is a fare slowdown on games on 1280/1024 with sync off. ill just have to look more into this as theres something not right here.

u really have no reason to upgrade to a dual-core cpu. its not going to 'double' ur performance if thats what u think it will do. in fact id think ur cpu would clobber most pentium D's out there. core 2 duo is a different story. but ur mobo doesnt support them.

thanks for the reply zcubed. its just that im getting very bad fps in most of the games i have. i was told that the pentium 4 i have is whats causing me not to get full speed. the whole point of me getting sli in the first place was so i would not have to worry about what resolution i put the games on slowing down, which is the case now.the monitor i have is dell m993s crt 1600/1200 i have to disable AA in the games profiles to play any of them on 1280/1024.i just thought a processor upgrade might sort the problem out. thanks anyway for the reply,

There is nothing wrong with your hardware configuration as it is. Getting a dual core CPU would be a complete waste of money. My guess is you've got a ton of Dell software installed & you never bothered to clean house. And the Dell BIOS probably isn't very tweakable & the performace difference between a properly tuned BIOS & default settings can be as much as 20-25%. Clean house & update all your drivers.

The optimal settings for your monitor are 1280 x 1024 at 75 Hz

yea jam has a very good point. clean up dell processes and services in your background and run games at 1280x1024. no point in going higher than that really.

thanks for the info i deleted all the dell bloatware and got a small increase in speed and downloaded spysweeper and that found 2 rootkits removed them and its alot better now, the rootkits must have been slowing everything down they were the severe risk ones. thanks again for all the help
