Not sure but when it comes to compaq they build a lot of stuff that isn't compatible with generic parts. Their cases/powersupplies and stuff do not work with standard ATX boards. You may be stuck paying HP/Compaq prices for any upgrade.
I've tried to view a manual but it seems it isn't available online. There were only a few images of the open case and I cannot tell whether the board is of standard ATX configuration. You may find that the better upgrade option will be a whole new non-namebrand box.

Didn't you post a similar question yesterday? I believe the answer was to upgrade your RAM to 256mb, dump Win2k, replace it with Win98SE.

Yu wanna upgrade your motherboard to what? Another socket 7 board? What would be the point in that?

If you're looking to increase performance, you'd need a complete upgrade...motherboard, CPU w/HSF, RAM, power supply, etc...a new case may be necessary too. Otherwise, follow the advice in your other post

Upgrading OEM PC's for the most part involves cannibalizing the box, and I doubt this is going to be an exception. I believe your Presario came in a customized ATX case.

If you can salvage the case go for it, but you will need to replace almost every major component like the mainboard, PSU, CPU, RAM and the video card.

The question is why bother when you can slap together a new PC for a little more and still keep your Presario which might come in handy down the road as a door stop...;~).

If I am building from scratch, how do I find out the motherboard, power supply and case are compatible? I guess ATX motherboard will fit ATX case. Some cases come in with a power supply unit. What about the compatibility of the motherboard with power supply unit?

Thanks in advance.

ATX motherboard will fit an ATX case. Beyond that, you're gonna have to look at some motherboards and see what processors and memory are compatible with the board you're looking at. All this info is on the board manufacturers website.

Now, your 7474 used components not available off the shelf and outside of hp, you will find little information on your motherboard.

Specs at:

Good advice above to keep the 7474 as a working machine and build another. Also good advice to increase memory and get 98se back on that machine. If you need 2000, you can dual boot 98se/2000 by installling 98 first and 2000 after. If you're using the the original 8Gig hdd, I'd not bother with dual boot.
