I have a compaq presario 7940. I would like to upgrade the processor. The current processor is a 600 MHz AMD Athlon K7 with 200Mhz bus. Does anyone know what cpu I can upgrade to? It is a slot type socket. Ram maxed out at 512mb. thanks Steveo
I believe the fastest Slot A Athlons ran at 1GHz. Since that's an older board (and also because the 5 minutes I spent at HP's website didn't tell me anything about the board), I'm gonna say that you should limit yourself to the version that has 512KB of external cache, instead of the Thunderbird version of the Slot A 1GHz which has 256K of on-chip cache.
The Intel-based slots allowed users to run even faster CPUs with a Slot 1 to Socket 370 adaptor. I'm not sure if there are Slot A to Socket A adaptors or not, but if there are, you might wanna go that route (ebay) and pop in an even faster CPU.

You are correct that the fastest slot-A Athlon is the 1.0GHz. There are different models though...the model 2 "Classic" or the model 4 "Thunderbird". All slot-A CPUs run at 100MHz (200MHz FSB).
You're gonna have to dig up the specs on the Compaq motherboard & find out exactly what CPUs are supported.
