CPU/Ram: 1.7ghz/1gb
Product: E-Machine T1742

Hello All,

Can anyone enlighten me how I would go about upgrading an "Intel® Celeron® Processor 1.70GHz (w/128KB L2 cache & 400MHz FSB)" ?

I currently installed 1 GB RAM (.max) onto the machine and I'm interested in upgrading it from a celeron to perhaps a Pentium 4+ (HT, D) Processor. Obviously the CPU speed should be equal to or greater than 1.7ghz

I've attached the specs of the PC if you're interested:

CPU: Intel® Celeron® Processor 1.70GHz (w/128KB L2 cache & 400MHz FSB)
Operating System: Genuine Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
Chipset: Intel® 845GL chipset
Memory: 128MB DDR (PC2100) <-- upgraded to 1GB
Hard Drive: 40GB HDD
Optical Drive: 48x Max. CD-ROM Drive; 3.5" 1.44MB FDD
Video: Intel® Extreme Graphics 3D (845GL shared)
Sound: AC '97 Audio
Network: 10/100Mbps built-in Ethernet
Modem: 56K ITU v.92-ready Fax/Modem
Peripherals: Keyboard, Wheel Mouse, Stereo Speakers
Ports/Other: 6 USB 2.0 ports (2 on front), 1 Serial, 1 Parallel, 2 PS/2, Mic-In & Head Phone jack on front, Audio-In & Out, 3 PCI slots (2 available)
Dimensions: 7.25"W x 14.125"H x 16"D

Any help would be much appreciated. Also, if you could take it one step further and inform me how to:

a. overclock the current processor
b. and/or overclock an upgraded processor

I'm a big fan of ebay, tigerdirect, newegg so I can buy from any of these vendors.

Thank You

you would need to know what the socket type is to house the chip on your motherboard first. best way to do that is to go to the pc manufacturers website and look up your model number to see the specs, then go to newegg or wherever and see what they have available.

considering your overall package, the best upgrade you could do to your pc is to install a decent video card. you would want to look for a reasonably priced 128mb AGP 4x/8x card.

as far as overclocking, boot to the bios and see if you can find something like a clock/voltage control or something similar to oc your processor. careful not to oc too much or you may find yourself not able to boot at all. you would need to reset the cmos at that point.

Download cpu-z. Thyen click on mainboard tab. This will show you your model number of this board. and then go to intel website type in the chip which is 845GL and the model number and this will tell you exactly what processors you can put in there.

I'm taking a edjucated guess on this, but you may be able to upgrade to a Pentium 4 533FSB 2.8ghz Northwood core cpu.

It would help to know WHY you wanna upgrade the CPU (besides the fact that it's a crappy Celeron). If it's for better gaming performance it's not gonna help much...your problem is this:

I would like to upgrade so that I can improve the overall performance of the machine. I am not looking for high graphics as I am not a gamer. However, I despise Celeron processors and prefer to upgrade to Pentium.

I followed Cobra_R suggestion and found that I have the Intel i845GL Rev. A1 Chipset. I also have Imperial 1.03 motherboard. Can't find where on the intel.com website this information is needed.

Thanks for your replies all.

Okay, went to powerleaper.com and this is what I found is compatible:

Intel P4 2.8GHz 400MHz FSB 478pin 512K Northwood CPU OEM
400 Front Side Bus

However, the only thing newegg has (for $87.99 might I add) is:

Intel Pentium 4 2.8B Northwood 533MHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 478 Processor - OEM

Will that work? Even though the FSB is higher MHz on the newegg? Is there anything with the fan or heat sink I would need to change?

Thanks

Also, would it help to wait until the Core Duo processors come out? Doesn't the price of Pentiums expect to decrease due to the newly manufactured processor? What would you experts recommend?

No it's not going to work if your motherboard isn't deisigned for 533 FSB processors then it will not work.

Some Intel motherboard can handle mutil FSB speeds, but it seems like yours doesn't or else it would have FSB 533/400.

If you are going to upgrade to a 2.8Ghz 400Mhz FSB CPU, that is going to cost you in the 100 range. Now if your system does not have an AGP slot, the best you can get is Geforce FX5500 128bit memory. That is going to cost you about $50-70... However, if your system do have an AGP slot, geforce 6600gt or x800gto will be a good choice for the 2.8Ghz CPU, that is going to cost u in the $100-$150 range. Now if you are planning to upgrade 2.8Ghz + 6600gt/x800gto AGP, you may also want to consider a better power supply, which runs about $50 for a good one... If you add those up, you get...

2.8ghz + fx5500 pci = ~$150-170

2.8ghz + 6600gt/x800gto + $50 psu = ~$300-$320

My suggestion would be if you do upgrade, try to stay below $100 range like maybe a 2.6ghz 400fsb p4 + radeon 9600xt if you do have AGP or get a cheap fx5500 128bit. Because if you do planning to choose 6600gt/x800gto + 2.8ghz CPU + $50 psu = 300 range, I would rather start a PCI-E path rather than sticking with dead agp...

Well ATI just came out with a PCI version of the X1300. So he can always upgrade to that.

Thanks guys - so you are saying that I could actually upgrade to a 2.6ghz 400fsb p4 + radeon 9600xt? I found a 2.6ghz 400fsb p4 somewhere on the web. So I assume that if its not a 2.8 but instead a 2.6, that it will still be compatible with the motherboard as long as the FSB = 400mhz. Is that correct?

I do plan on upgrading the video card but can I do that down the road fater upgrading the processor?

Thanks

Dude, go to the website I posted in response #9, scroll down the page a bit & look at the picture of the motherbaord...is it the same as yours? If so, it only has standard PCI slots...no AGP & no PCI-Express. That means your video card choices are severely limited. The best available were listed by Cobra...either the FX5500 PCI with 128-bit memory or the X1300 PCI (which I didn't even know exists).

The Radeon 9600XT is available as an AGP card only.

Just upgrade to the Pentium 4 Northwood core 2.6 or 2.8 400mhz FSB, zipzoomfly.com sells a 2.8ghz and throw in a PCI X1300 (PCI) version.

This is the best you can do on your system.

Yeah Jam, not too many people know about ATI coming out with a X1300 PCI version. It snuck under the radar, because ATI didn't want to spend hardly any money on advertisments to sell something that is not going to make a dent in the gaming world. This card was aimed at corp companies office computers. I stubbled acrossed by mistake last month on xbitlabs website.

So what is not satisfactory? You may have other issues that can be resolved for free.

That system is fine for word processing, internet, e-mail, etc. if configured correctly. Perhaps that is the real issue?

I have the same machine and the fastest processor you can upgrade to is a 2.0 GHz. I have done tons of research on the matter considering I am a huge gamer. As for a video card I have a Radeon 9250 PCI that ran around $100. The best solution would be to upgrade your ram using any type of PCI2100 DDR. The more ram the machine has the less it will rely on the processor for running applications since the ram will hold much more information and can read from the ram quicker when needed. I put $200 into a $400 dollar machine and now it is comparable although not quite to a factory $1k machine.
