Need to know what motherboard you are using.

I don't suffer from insanity, I embrace it.

Don't know what board you have...if it's the single voltage type, the very best you can do is a 200mhz Pentium Classic. If it's a dual voltage board, you can go as high as a 233mhz Pentium MMX, possibly an AMD K6-2/400, but only if you can set the CPU voltage down to 2.2v...which I highly doubt. Max RAM would be 64mb due to the cache limit of the chipset.

I wouldn't throw any money at it.

You should find a name and/or numbers silkscreened on the motherboard. You need to take a very close look. Maybe a logo design.

I can't make your pics work.

Socket 5? I could be wrong, but I don't think socket 5 came in dual voltage.

I couldn't get your pics to come up either...

When I checked your site, all that came up were blank pics with a red X in the upper left corner

have a look at this...see page 6 for a pic of the board:

go to www.download.com ,,, search for "belarc advisor" without quotes. download and install it and run it,,, it will give u complete details of whatever you have on ur computer ... i wouldnt suggest trying to poke around with static dirty hands...
belarc might give u exact name and details about 70% of times ...
its free and small program...

I think spartanxxx said it best, NO. 1st off your using a computer thats very outdated. 2nd and this is very important so listen closely, Compaq is JUNK, JUNK, JUNK!!! I would spend a dime or even piss on it if it was on fire. Go and get your self a new computer. It's time and in the long run you will be much happier, Compaq uses exclusive parts in there computers, IE something breaks You pay up and over your ass for their replacement parts, example my girlfriend had a compaq running a 120 pentium the mobo went bad, i called to see what a new mobo cost and it was $400.00, this was 2 years ago, after i finally stopped laughing and caught my breath, i askled if he was serious, he was, i built a completly new system with a 1500xp for under $400.00, This should answer your question.

Ya know, I don't think calling Chris' Compaq junk is going to help him a lot. I get a lot of these old things running on 95b and give them to people who sure as hell don't consider them junk.

Now it's likely he won't be able to go beyond 100~133Mhz but the last P100 I bought was brand new at a computer show for 8 bucks and he already has enough memory to make it work.

We may not ever know who built that motherboard but the link jam provided in Response 12 at least tells us the board probably ain't dual voltage but also that he may be able to get it to work at 66/133Mhz (up from the current 60/90Mhz).

My next door neighbor is running a Compaq DeskPro2000 133/32Mb rig that didn't cost me nor her a dime. With Win95b, Office97Pro, IE5.5 or Mozilla and cable modem it does everything she asks it to. The 2 166Mhz DeskPro4000 machines I gave to a business a few miles away have given no trouble for over 2 years.

I don't like Compaq machines either but junk? I also don't like answers that say throw it away. I do agree that spending over a few bucks to get it running is a waste and I get most of my extra parts by junking out machines that need a fix involving money.

End of rant,

Skip
