Upgrading p4 CPU on optiplex 170l

Dell / Optiplex 170l
January 2, 2009 at 16:34:25
Specs: Windows XP, p4
The original CPU in the PC was a p4 2.8ghz (478).

Mobo I believe is a GX170.

Got hold of a p4 3.4ghz (prescott, 478, 1mb cache, HT).

Replaced it (changed thermal paste), on start up, it said it did not recognize the CPU. It was still possible for it to run at the slower speed of the original processor.

Though information on dell website said the optiplex could handle higher p4 speeds, their helpline said it was only up to 3.06

Anyone had any helpful experience with getting a faster processor working on a dell mobo?
Does dell have any official BIOS that will get the faster processor to work, or is there an unofficial BIOS that will get it to work? Or is there any other software or information that will help?

Is there any more information to give about the system that will be of any help?

Or is this a complete dead end, is it just not possible for it to work?

(p.s. I already know that it would be cheaper to buy new equipment than buy old, so there's no need to tell me that ;) )

The latest BIOS is A09 and as you have surmised only 400/533fsb CPU's are supported, even if you could use a HT CPU the increase in performance would not be great.

Lets face it DELL Optiplexes are made for robustness in Office Environments.....
