Name: TMP-Man
Here is my current old setup and I'm kinda want to upgrade my CPU and motherboard and RAM
Asus A7v Classic Rev1.05 KT133 Motherboard
Athlon XP Tbred-B 2100+ @ 2040Mhz (102x20)
768MB PC133 RAM CL2-2-2 @ 136Mhz
40GB + 120GB HD
128MB Geforce FX5200 128bit (276/515)And I'm planning to upgrade to this
Intel Pentium 4 505 2.66Ghz CPU
ECS 848P motherboard
1GB Dual channel DDR400and I'm planning to overclock this setup from 2660 to 3500Mhz+. I'd seen people o/c to 4.0Ghz air cooled with the same CPU but Asus motherboard... All these is going to cost under $220 to upgrade... Is it worth it? I'm not a big gamer and the highest requirement game I play is GTA San Andreas and Guildwars... Or maybe should I save up and get dual-core cpu next year? The most I will spend on upgrading is <$500 (mobo + cpu + ram + video card)
TMP-Man
Asus A7V classic rev 1.05
Athlon XP 2100+ @ 101x20 1.75v
768MB PC133 RAM @ 134Mhz 2-2-2
40GB 5400RPM + 120GB 7200RPM HD
128MB Geforce FX5200 128bit

Is all of this upgrade stuff used? $220 sounds a little too cheap to me. I am assuming that you would buy a new case and ps as well. But even witout it, $220 sounds a bit on the cheap side.
My on personal opinion on the upgrade would be to stay with AMD and go with at least an 3400, 64bit, 939 pin out, and an Asus board with nVidia version 4 chip set. JMO.
Or hey, how about this dual core?

Good luck on your decision.

I'm an AMD guy too but I see no need to jump on the dual-core bandwagon just yet.
Hey YO,
Didn't expect to see you back posting so soon. How ya doing? Surgery get postponed or was it easier than you expected?
TMP-Man,
The CPU you listed is S775, but the board is a S478, so you're gonna have to make an adjustment there. Also, a new PSU should probably be added to your wish list.
ASUS A7N8X-X

WinME/WinXP Pro SP2

This is the setup here $119 motherboard + CPU.. And Dual chanel DDR sells around $75 at fry's electronics in store... Then I will buy a copper heatsink for ~$25... My power supply is already an Enermax 330watt (A64 and Prescott Rdy)and my case is a standard ATX case... And i have agp video card, SB sound card, network card, 2x HD, CDRW + cd rom, keyboard, mouse, monitor... all those..

This one is way too expensive man... why cuz $380 + $75 Dual channel DDR + $100 for a good PCI-express video card = $555... Also I will need to get a better power supply (dual-core CPU) + case... Thats gonna cost ~$600...

Well Jam,
It's like this. They ripped my shoulder to the left, and then to the right. Of course I didn't know anything. I was out. Also they administered a block to my left side. I was really numb for 20 hours. This is called a shoulder manipulation. It is considered surgery because they are actually tearing apart scar tissue from a previous injury that I had occur to me sometime back in March of this year. Does it hurt? Hell yeah it does. I have to go thru 5 hours of therapy each day for the next three weeks. The good thing about it, I'm off work for the next three weeks. lol! This problem is also called Frozen Shoulder. Or adhesive capsulitis. I had this done to me yesterday at 9am cst. I called the doctor later on in the afternoon and asked "did you hear anything pop or crackle?" And he said "to give you an example as to what it sounds like, it's like pulling apart two pieces of velcro real fast." Jam, just to let you know how fast this kind'a problem can happen to someone, on May 1st, I had no problem spraying my deodorent under my arm. On May 2nd, I couldn't lift my arm up any higher than 45 degrees. That's the pits! LOL! Get it!? Hopefully I will be OK. Got a great doctor!

TMP-Man,
By all means, go for it. I just hate to see someone switch from AMD to Intel. That's just me talk'n.
YO

Hi - if your not a massive gamer dont bother spending all that money on only gaining another 9fps. you'd be much better of buying a better graphics card , overclock both the cpu and card - lower the frame rate and enjoy your games.
dont waste money on yesterdays technology. Wait until you have some serious cash and buy a good 939 board and pair it with an AMD 3000 64.
Just my opinion...
your current spec is quite respectable, just the card lets you down.
oh and also dont Buy an ECS board, cheap and nasty"

Athlon is great but Pentium 4 is better at overclocking... I seen people overclock a Prescott Pentium 4 506J from 2666 (133x20) to 4000 (200x20) with stock Intel heatsink on it +0.2v... If I buy Athlon 64 3000 (200x9)... I'll need to buy more expensive RAM like DDR600+ to reach 300x9 = 2700.. And most of the time el cheapo mobo dont come with AGP/PCI locks and I will have problem there... I also burrowed my friends 6600GT 128MB and put it in my rig... guess what 33% increase over fx5200 in all the games I play. Is it worth it?
TMP-Man
Asus A7V classic rev 1.05
Athlon XP 2100+ @ 102x20 = 2040Mhz 1.75v
768MB PC133 RAM @ 134Mhz 2-2-2
40GB 5400RPM + 120GB 7200RPM HD
128MB Geforce FX5200 128bit 276/515

That's exactly the point I wanted to add
too. If you take a cheap board you will not
be able to OC to the planned amound and
with ECS I had my doubts.
On the other hand I read that ECS is
getting better in that area but the only
ECS board I every owned was the good old
K7S5A with only 100 or 133MHz FSB as an
option. Well, it made the 750MHz Athlon
Thunderbird into a 1GHz one and still ran
stable for over a year with my nephew
gaming on it.
Was that 33% more fps at exactly the same
graphic setting with the 6600GT or did it
run at higher details?
BTW:
I'm quite interested if there had been any
problems with installing the Thouroughbred
on your Asus A7V. I own an Asus A7V133 Raid
myself and according to Asus the maximal
possible CPU would be the Athlon XP 2100+
Palomino!
Being able to install a 133MHz FSB
Thoroughbred would be a nice option to keep
that thing as a suitable gaming system for
my nephew without investing too much money!

Sorry not my day today!
About the updrading or no upgrading that's
exactly the question. For that amount of
money it sounds okay to me if you really
need the addition performance. For your
gaming the will be no much more performance
because of the FX5200 which is already the
bottleneck I guess.
Oh, and it's possible to OC an Athlon64
3000+ Winchester to 2700MHz by using PC3200
Ram. You just need to set the Ram to DDR266
and together with the 50% OC you're back to
400MHz ram clock!
I did it myself on an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
and it was stable. On a computer magazine
they tried it too on a MSI K8N Neo2
Platinum and the performance was really
good. The calculated that this made the
3000+ into something around a 4400+.
The issue with the Winchester is that you
need single sided ram if you plan to
upgrade to 4 ram sticks late or they will
clock down to 333MHz automatically. Well,
that cost me a handful bucks more and in
january there was no alternative to the
winchester!
