Subject: Upgrading CPU... is it worth it?OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 64CPU/Ram: Dual AMD Opteron 275 2.2Model/Manufacturer: Alienware MJ-12 7550a |
Comment: I have a Tyan Thunder K8WE (S2895) motherboard that supports dual AMD Opteron 940 socket CPUs. I'm using two Opteron 275 (2.2 GHz) CPUs and the board can support up to two Opteron 290 (2.8 GHz) CPUs. Would the increase in speed, from 2.2 GHz to 2.8 GHz, be enough to justify a $1300 investment in two new CPUs? Would I even notice the speed increase? I'm runing Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit and work with HDV video and some 3D rendering and animation (I use Adobe Premiere CS3, Adobe Photoshop CS3, e-frontier Poser 7.0.2, and e-on software Vue 6.5 Infinite 64bit). Thanks.

Reply: (edit)A CPU speed increase of almost 30% is substantial enough for anyone to notice IMHO. As to whether it is worth $1300 - that will depend on what the machine is primarily used for. I have a couple of close friends that are multimedia consultants & those guys usually don't have a problem spending more than the average PC user to obtain the most performance they can get - to them it all makes sense, because time is money. If you fit within that category, it may be worth it .... who knows.

Reply: (edit)The performance gain is roughly 7% per 100mhz. (7%)=7x(400mhz)=4 = 28%. It's a nice performance gain but like saber said is it worth the $1300 price tag?

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the formula and advice... The machine us used for hobby, but shaving close to an hour off of what would origionally be a three hour render seems like it's worth it (assuming that performance translates that way...). Cheers!
