Do I need to reset anything on the mobo after upgrading the cpu? I recently upgraded to a P3 and it is supposed to be 500mhz but it shows in bios as cpu type "to be announced" and speed " 300 mhz". I have a HP with an ASUS mobo.

To be announced? Are you serious?
That is a very new problem to me.
What kind of motherboard do you have?
Depending on your mobo, I would say that either the FSB jumpers aren't properly set or the BIOS needs configuring. More detailed info about your setup would help.

I have an HP pavilion 6460 with an ASUS mobo and it had a Celeron but I looked up my specs on HP and it said it would accept upto a 500mhz P2 or P3. I cannot change the cpu type or speed in bios and i cannot overclock it because its an HP. and it shows as 300mhz and cpu type: "to be announced" ?????

I'm guessing that you will have to choose the type cpu it is. In other words how many cylinders and whatever the other deal was. That kind of stuff. Do you remember? Most of it is written down on your hard drive.

Oh yeah! It's heads and cylinders. Then you choose what type it is from the info above.
Like type 47. Brings back memories. Good post!

"It's heads and cylinders".......that would be related to a hard drive enumeration in the BIOS. parksr13 is talking about CPU.

parksr13,

Could you post the ASUS motherboard details?

Looks like you have the ASUS P2B-VE, according to HP your board does not support the "coppermine" core.

You might want to check your upgrade CPU's core to clarify that, if it is then you're SOL.

You have to use the BIOS from HP. The BIOS from Asus will not work. If you look very closely at the motherboard, you'll see some dots of solder labeled Award and Phoenix. There will be a resistor soldered across the the dots labeled Phoenix on the HP version of the board. The Asus version used an Award BIOS, the HP uses a Phoenix BIOS. I read a post once of someone trying the Asus BIOS on a HP version, and all they got for their trouble was a dead motherboard.
