I agree with Alfa! Don't do it! Sell the system and go AMD XP.
I recently upgraded my main desktop system from a Celeron 600MHz, Asus CUV4x to a Celeron 1.3GHz, Asus TUV4x.
Originally I was going to get a 1.1 or 1.2GHz Celeron as a cheap upgrade and intended to swap the processor down with two other systems. I figured I could switch a 500MHz Celeron and a PII350MHz as they all used Socket 370 compatible MOBOs. I figured the $110.00 would be a cheap triple upgrade. WIN/WIN/WIN
I made one critical error.
I let a friend talk me into going big and buying a 1.3GHz and he confirmed it would fit! The cost was only $150.
Big f*cking mistake.
I checked Asus's website (really crap now!) and verified my board had a Socket 370 which would fit the 1.3GHz.
I do not know how I goofed this one (I think I misread the Asus site CUVx vs TUVx) but I bought a 1.3Ghz Intel Tualatin processor which was incompatible with my Coppermine MOBO. This necessitated a MOBO upgrade another $200. Worse off was the waste of Thermal paste on three systems and the time invested trying to get a hold of Intel Tech support.
I ending up rebuilding three systems and rewiring the 3rd. Waste o Time!
Hindsight is 20/20. I would have kept my system intact (avoid the XP reinstall) and bought a AMD XP system with the faster ram. Arguable easier to overclock. Better processor. Better customer service. Better company. More compatible with WinXP.
If you do persist in going Intel. Check the following hardware review sites before upgrading. I wish I had.
