Hi my processor is overheating (its pretty old) and I am trying to buy a new processor for my Sony laptop PCG-FRV27, right now it has Intel Pentium 4, 2.6ghz speed, its Northwood, L1 Trace Cache -12K. L1 Data Cache - 8KB. L2 chache - 512KB, Socket type 478 Pin, die size 131 mm2. It could be a bit slower or a bit faster than the processor I have right now.

Newegg has a processor in stock but its a bit faster - Intel Pentium 4 2.8B Northwood 533MHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 478 Processor - OEM - so I am wondering if this would work with m laptop. Here is the link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116215

Also, I am lost because I am not sure whether its a desktop processor or laptop, or it doesn't matter?

Thank you very much

It won't work, it's a bad idea, it's a complete waste of time & money. Just fix your laptop's cooling system & run it until it's time for a new laptop.

What do you mean it won't work? Do you mean that the processor is not compatible? or that this idea won't work because I should not touch the processor in general?

Both of these assumptions are true.

Thanks, but I've heard of people changing/upgrading their processors on their laptops. Would you know what type of processor I could use to change the existing one?

I can't work with the current processor because it overheats so much that it automatically shuts down the computer. Fan and cooling system work fine.

Obviously not. If they worked fine it wouldn't overheat.

You may need to change a few settings in your BIOS so that the fan system performs at full capacity. Also how long does it take for your system to overheat and auto-shutdown? With regards to changing processor what makes you think a faster one wouldn't overheat like the current one? The last time I heard of anyone upgrading processor's and other internal laptop gear was many moons ago when Win2K had been out for a bit, as jam said best just to sort out the overheat problem (run less processes and clean out the fan unit) and wait till the machine dies in it's sleep:P
