Subject: upgrade to AMD XP
OS: Win 2000
CPU/Ram: AMD Duron 800 Mhz / 256 S
Comment:

I have a GA-7ZM (KT133 Chipset) motherboard w/ AMD Duron 800 MHz CPU. Want to upgrade to AMD XP 2000 to 2500. Will the new CPU be automatically recognized, or I have to change something on the motherboard? My OS is Win 2000 w/ SP2.

Thanks for any help!

You should always check your specs before buying a CPU...hopefully you didn't buy an XP yet. Your board supports 100 FSB CPUs only...either a Duron or Athlon T-bird...but NOT an XP...

Scroll down this list & find your mobo model number...

Thank you jam. It's true, no support for the XP models on GA-7ZM. No, I hadn't bought it yet. But still, if I upgrade to Athlon T-Bird 1.3 or 1.4 GHz, will the motherboard recognize it automatically?

TIA

For ref. I'm w/ Duron 800 on a GA-7ZM card.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with your board's settings...but chances are it won't be automatically detected...you'll either have to make changes in the BIOS, or change some jumpers on the board, or possibly DIP switches...maybe even a combination of the above. Check your manual for the settings...if you don't have the manual, go to http://www.giga-byte.com & download it...

My 100 Mhz boards (or 200, if you will) automatically recognized Thunderbird chips (I'm not familiar with your specific motherboard, although I do have the same chipset). Make sure you get a 200 Mhz T-bird and not a 266 Mhz one (such as the 1.4 Ghz). I am using a 950 and 1100 Mhz T-bird (9.5 x 100 and 11 x 100), so either of those should work with your board. However, you MAY need to flash your BIOS to get one to be automatically recognized. Check the motherboard manufacturer's website for details. Good luck.
