I've been reading and see that I probably need to switch motherboards to upgrade my Pentium 3, Dell XPS T600. I want a pentium 4 and see that the processors are totally different socketwise. What kind of motherboard specifically will fit into my current XPS T600 that can support a standard P4 chip. Thanks!

DEll XPS is a propriatary system, therefore you will have a hard job to find a MoBo.
Cheaper to buy a second-hand PC IMO!

Where would be a good place to start looking for a mobo? I'm not going to spend 1-2000 bucks on a new system...I basically want my rig to be able to run world of warcraft...my pentium 3 at it's current 600 MHz definitely can't handle it...but I've done alot of web researching and the price of the components is dirt cheap compared to buying a new rig. I can get a mobo and processor for about 200...just bought a Pentium 4 3.2ghz 512kb 800m FSB Northwood 478 P4 CPU for $50 before I realized like a dummy that P4s don't just plug into P3s...my friend told me they did. So now that I've got the CPU, I'm figuring that I might as well buy a new mobo to plug into the XPS...please advise where I might be able to find a dell XPS mobo...thanks for the time

As Santa point out...Dell systems are proprietary, meaning that you can't just slap any old motherboard in your Dell case. And there may not even be a P4 available that will fit in your case.
You also have to realize that you're gonna have to buy new RAM & very possibly a new power supply, not to mention you'll have to reinstall WinXP. You should have thought about all this before you bought a P4...plus you bought a S478 P4, which is already a dead platform.

I don't have a P4...I have a P3...i was going to use it just for web surfing and such and it's perfectly fine for that. I'm getting curious about upgrading computers though and figure that this would be a good pet project PC to start with.

Well, you live and learn. I'm a computer nerd but don't know what makes them work...and I want to learn. With an XPS T600, how would I get a gauge as to what newer Dell motherboards are out there? I have no doubt that I can find one...just want to make sure to find one that works.

XPS are propriatery, that means the Motherboard is designed for that particular Model. Newer Dell's usually use fairly standard MoBo's.
"..just bought a Pentium 4 3.2ghz 512kb 800m FSB Northwood 478 P4 CPU for $50"
Well then you will need an ATX Case and Motherboard and DDR memory to go with it, the memory from your DELL is no longer used.
IMO Sell the Dell which is worth £40.00 GBP and buy a good second-user P4 for around £100.00 GBP

What particular model should I get that I know will correspond with the Pentium 4 3.2ghz 512kb 800m FSB Northwood 478 P4 CPU? I'd rather have one fo the non proprietary models, so can you list a few that would work? You guys are a big help, keep the info coming.

Your just better off building a new system.
I wouldn't even bother what you are doing it's a waste of time and effort imo.
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ OC 2.7ghz
4GB Dual Channel DDR 3200
Nvidia 7900GT
SATA II 2x 300gig 7200rpm 16mb cache RAID-0+1
Gigabyte Nforce 4 SLI

Dude, you're not getting it. Do you even know what proprietary means?
Chances are, you are NOT going to find a S478 motherboard that will fit in your old Dell case. The XPS T600 was introduced in 1999...a lot of changes have been made over the past 8 yrs. Not only are you gonna need a different case & motherboard, but you'll need DDR memory, a power supply & probably a video card too. And if you're still using the 1999 hard drive, there's not much point putting that into a newer system either. In other words, you're looking at a complete build, not just an upgrade to your old system.

I live in the UK and the exchange rate is around 2$ to the 1GBP.
These are examples for you to mull over:
P3 Dell 450mhz £30.00
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Dell-Dimensio...
AMD Athlon 2600+ (p4 2500 equivelent) £110.00
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AMD-2600-MHz-...
Upgrading you current PC would cost shed loads more and will be a Frankenstein PC.....

Listen to the guys, I'm on a S478 rig and I've spent aroun £1200 on my system with upgrades. I'ts good but I could have built a beeter system from scratch at half the price.
P4 3.20HT 800mhz FSB
Abit IS7-E2
2x1024mb OCZ Value DDR400 Dual Channel
80GB Diamondmax9+ SATA 160GB Diamondmax10 SATA Sapphire Radeon X1650 PRO 256mb
Hiper Type R 530W PSU

I understand what you all are saying but you're not answering with what I should do with the new Pentium 4 3.2ghz 512kb 800m FSB Northwood 478 P4 CPU I just bought and that's serving me no good. In your opinions, what make and model would be served well with this chip? I'VE GOTTEN THE POINT THAT THE DELL IS USELESS NOW! I just want to move forward with the CPU that I do have and build from there. Thanks.

Sell the P4 CPU on EBAY it is out-of date, if you go INTEL you need Socket 775, AMD then AM2 socket.
You could always cover the CPU in wax and make an ornament out of it as a tribute to the old adage "look before you leap"
Yes the DELL is also good for selling on EBAY someone will want it.......

Oh wells, hopefully someone stupid can help me turn that P4 CPU into a profit online (craigslist helps!). Thanks for all your help guys.

You don't necessarily HAVE to sell the P4...it's definitely better than your P3. You just have to realize that your idea to use the Dell to build off of is a "dead horse".
Like you've been told - if you want to use the P4, you'll need a different case, power supply, motherboard, RAM, video card, hard drive, etc...not to mention a copy of Windows. If you think you can round up all that stuff for cheap, by all means build yourself a S478 system.
BTW, don't take anymore computing advice from the friend that told you a P4 will work in a P3 board...LOL

No sh1t! lol...how much do you think I can turn a computer around for if I do get decent ram (at least 500MB), and a decent HDD (40+GB)? Thanks.

if you are thrifty you could turn that into a system for 500 more dollars, it will take a lot of research to make sure everything is compatable. get an 80 gig hd for 50 bucks, find out if your mobo has onboard video and if not get a video card for 50-75 dollars. dont buy anything unless you know exactly what you need there are mony different types of ram and video cards out there and not all them are going to be compatable with you mobo and cpu
