I have an old dell computer. It has an intel chipset motherboard, 200W power, 384mb(ish) sdram, and an old Pentium 2 400Mhz processor. I think it is the 100mhz FSB version. What can I do about upgrading this cheaply, How about the processor... Can I get a slotket and put in a Celeron, and if so, What is the HIGHEST processor i culd put in it, considering the age of the Mobo and 200W power.
Im sorry but I dont know the Mobo specs, but any guesses about what it could take? and what sort of slotket i would need?
Thanks, any help is much appreciated,
James

i have a very similar comp except from gateway, it uses a intel 440BX motherboard. download belarc advisor from http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html and it will tell u what chipset and everything

Your best bet is to buy a whole new set-up plus you'll only reap the rewards. By the way which I should of asked you first what do you use ur computer for most? Then you choose the best performance to Price ratio. Yes.

Fellow buy a new system. U could buy a brand new system for $650 canadian which would run 4 to 6 times faster then ur system. What ever u do do not go with celerons. Ill tell u this about celerons. A amd duron 1.3ghz runs as fast as a celeron at 1.7ghz that tells u about their cpu power. Finally durons are almost out of the market and its more effective to buy a lower class amd xp like the 1800xP+ or 2000xP+ which will cost u just a little more then that duron which is priced at $75 bucks canadian. If u need i could even give u all the prices and the final price of a computer. Its never worth updating computers older then 2 years old because technology is to far beyond them by then. Lastly even if u upgrade cpu it wont do much to improve ur total performance because everything else is still old. exp if u buy a celeron. Well gl hope u make a good choice.
PS i had a celeron once, and never again.

Hi, Thanks for all your help.
At the moment there are many computers in my house, I currently am using a AthlonXP2000+ which I built about half a year ago, but this old dell is just lying around untouched, and I was thinking that we are either going to have to upgrade it, or scrap it for a few pieces... hence I was wondering how upgradeable it was.
I looked into gettting completely new insides for it... mobo, psu, cpu, hsf, ram... and that came to about £130 british pounds, which seemed quite good for a XP2000+ and asus A7v8X-X mobo etc...
