Ok, I have a Compaq Pressario 5700 at 600mhz, upgradable to 1ghz (slot A), do I do it. Or go with a new motherboard & cpu? I was going to pick up a used AMD 1ghz classic on e-bay but those things are going for $140+! Are they crazy? A friend of mine picked up a new ECS board & celeron 2ghz (overclocked to 2.4ghz)for under $200! Should I do the same? And why are those 1ghz AMD's going for so much?! Thanks for any info you can provide! See for yourself go to e-bay and search amd slot A. I do know they are rare, from what I hear?

AMD ATHLON XP 2000+ for $96

ENERMAX EG365P-VE for $50

This is a low cost solution. If you upgrade the bios on the motherboard, it can run a XP2000+. The board also supports SD and DDR RAM so you can carry your old SD RAM over, or upgrade to DDR. However, your power supply might not be powerful enough, so I suggest you get a 350W Enermax Power Supply. It's $50, but it's cheap considering it's one of the best power supply units I've ever used. So for about 200 bucks, you can kick that celeron's ass and get yourself a new power supply.

Total cost: $204 + shipping (though I suggest you check out local retailers and save even more money)

Amourek,
Thanks for the info much appreciated! You mention upgrading the Bios, are you refering to the ECS board you mention above? And does the bios need to be updated to run the AMD XP2000+ or only anything above that? Also how difficult is it to update the bios? Thanks again

For $50, you can by an entire new case w/power supply, you might wanna consider that instead. Also, I believe the price for the XP2000+ was entered incorrectly...pricewatch has them listed for $69...so that would make your total cost much less.

Yes, the ECS board I suggested needs to be a bios update to use a XP2000. It's quite easy to do...otherwise I believe XP1800 is the limit, but I'm not sure. Check the ECS website to be sure.

The site I quoted won't give you best prices, but they are open to pricematching.
