Upgrade my CPU or RAM?

OS: XP Pro
CPU/Ram: Sempron 3000+ 754 :'-(/51
Product: MSI K8TM-ILSR MoBo
Comment:

I was just wondering if i would see a big difference in performance if I upgraded to a 64 or even a Sempron with better than 128 kb/s L2 cache!

Also if I got more RAM would that make any difference, as it is now, if I have more than 3 things running my comp fully CHUUUNKS.

I dunno if this is due to my HUGE 128kb/s of cache on that heap of s--- or not enough RAM or something else altogether.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, not about to throw even more money away unless I'm 100% sure it's not going to be a waste.

Thanks

A CPU upgrade might be helpful, but it depends on what you use your system for & how long you realistically plan on keeping it. Is this a 32-bit Sempron or a 64? Your motherboard is not a good one in terms of overclockability, so you're pretty limited on what you can do with it. Hopefully you have PC3200 RAM? Adding another 512MB certainly wouldn't hurt.

Do you regularly scan for viruses, spyware, dump temp files, defrag, etc?

Thanks jam!

I use it for d/ling with Azureus (resource RAPER), listening to music with iTunes (Another resource RAPER), watching movies and mild gaming mostly.

Yeah I got PC3200, and yeah I do those things regularly, although not dump temp files very often @ all, does that matter? Is there a quick and easy way of doin it besides My Computer - Documents & Settings etc?

So you reckon adding another stick of 512 would see a noticable difference in performance?

Thanks again

Noticable? Only if you're pushing the limits of the 512MB you have.

"Is there a quick and easy way of doin it...."

Download & install a program called CCleaner (aka Crap Cleaner):

virtually there is no perfomance gain with more ram unless windows or any aplication is using more memory than what you have. For example, with more ram you won't get more Frames per Sec in a game unless the game's textures use 500mb of memory (like quake4).
If you don't do heavy gaming I believe 512 of ram is enough.

Unless you run many small programs at once. Antivurs programs, firewalls, IM's and other stuff running in the background all the time do add up. So make sure you don't have a lot of stuff running all the time in the background when it doesn't need to be on. You will be amazed at how much ram gets eaten up by programs just running in the background when they don't need to be.

2GB Dual Channel DDR 3200
Nvidia 6800GT
SATA II 250gig 7200rpm 8mb cache
