Subject: Upgrade IBM T21 800Mhz to 1.0Ghz?
OS: Windows XP Pro
CPU/Ram: P3-800Mhz/256MB
Comment:

Hello. I have an IBM ThinkPad T21. It has an Intel Pentium-3 CPU with a clock speed of 800Mhz. I saw that some other ThinkPads in the T2x Series have 900Mhz and 1.0Ghz CPUs. Is a P3M 1.0Ghz compatible with my laptop? I think the voltage is the same but the FSB is 33Mhz Higher than my 100Mhz FSB...

Thanks,
Nick

the minor performance gain wouldn't be worth the cost

For 20 bucks on eBay, I think so... Can't you people just answer the question asked? Will it or Will it not work?

Can't you just use your PC to search the IBM site yourself?

I don't care if it is only $20...for one thing, you have a 100MHz FSB system, if you install a 133MHz CPU, it will run at 100MHz FSB. Do the math...a 1000MHz/133MHz CPU has a multi of 7.5x. Drop that CPU in a system with a FSB of 100MHz & it will run at 750MHz (7.5 x 100). Is that what you want?

"If he want's to act like this"? All I asked is "Is a P3M 1.0Ghz compatible with my laptop?" Does that sound like "Do you think I should install a P3M 1.0Ghz CPU in my Laptop or will it be a waste of money?"

Learn how to read, and im not the n00b here

The pentium III 1000 came in both 133 and 100 fsb version so if you get the 1000/100/256 version it should work if your bios can recognize it

I read just fine, but I just can't help but not to point out a typical noob like response.

800- 1ghz isn't gonna get you your email any faster. A non-n00b would surely know this ;)

Overclocking your athlon from 2000ghz to 2400ghz wont get your email any faster either but everyone seems to want to do it.
Questions should be answered as they were asked and the fact that jam is correct in that the upgrade will be 99% unnoticed, the original question should at least be answered.

Nope-- it won't. My comp is mainly used for video editing, where a 20%+ boost IS noticed.

I also do LOTS of photoshop/Illustrator work, and especially with CS2, it's CPU HUNGRY.

I'm running at FX-55 speed for a little over 100$ on ebay.

That said, anyone with a 800mhz laptop obviously isn't rendering Star Wars, hence the not gonna get you your email any faster comment.

Plus, if you come on asking for help like a total jerk, don't be surprised if you get less than direct answers.

look into your mobo specs. some mobos especially for p2's & 3's adjust based on instructions on the cpu. If the cpu is of the correct type and pin config, it will work. however, check into it... last thing, is the cooling. can your current setup handle it?

If your board can do 133, or theres a 100mhz version, the pins match and you HSF are sufficient, it'll work :)

Nothing's broken until you choose not to fix it.
