Subject: Upgrade cpu on amptron MB
Comment:

Hello,I have an amptron 9900a model MB and am trying to find out if it will accept a higher sped processor than AMD k6-2@500mhz cpu.Maybe a duron or something. It is a socket7 chipset, and I cant find enough info on it.I would like to upgrade the processor, but not MB.As I have heard the k6-2 can barely hit 550mhz overclocked. Please can someone shed some light on this for me.Also board says max of 3x 128 ram(sdram slots),but I have 512 and no errors.May not be using it,but bios and windows see's RAM.Any help would be greatly appreiciated.

Well, for starters, Duron is a SocketA processor...you have a Socket7 mobo. I could be wrong but I think the fastest Socket7 cpu made is 550Mhz. You have a K6-2 but there are also K6-3's...which are basically K6-2's with on-chip L2 cache. You'd probably need a BIOS update to run a K6-3. Regardless, I don't think the cost of a processor upgrade would be worth the 50Mhz gain.

Here's a link to your boards specs, FAQ's, BIOS update, manual, etc:

You've already got plenty of RAM...I don't see the need for more. What video card are ya running? A decent AGP card can boost performance...especially vs a PCI card.

The bottom line is you're pretty much maxxed out...other than possibly a new videocard, I wouldn't throw too much money at it.

Im hating life,Its a gf3 ti200,64ddr.Was hoping the board would take a better cpu. Thanks for the help. Most of what I could decipher is 550 would be the most I can get.I will double check MB jumpers to see if everything jives.May even see about the OC.Be good.

Well, that's a decent video card.

You can try tweaking your system a bit to try to get the most out of it. Try to run as lean as possible...get rid of all unecessary files...scandisk & defrag often. Keep your drivers current. You can tweak your BIOS settings, but be careful. Record what your settings are before you start. What do you use this PC for & what version of Windows are ya running?

Maybe someone else will have some suggestions....
