Subject: Upgrade CPU for Asus A7M266-M 1.0OS: Windows XP Home, serviceCPU/Ram: AMD Athlon 1.4GHz, 1024MB |
Comment: I found this board when looking up info on upgrading my processor. I have the Asus Tech A7M266-M 1.06 mobo. I currently have AMD Athlon(tm) Processor, MMX, 3dNow, ~1.4GHz and the bus clock says 200mHz(according to Belarc advisor and dxdiag). I'm still a novice in computer tech so I don't know what FSB is. I gather that I have to use a 266MHz processor with this board (or does it have to be 200?), but does the description have to say FSB? I was looking on pricegrabber and saw some 266MHz athlons like the AMD Athlon MP 2800+ (2.25GHz, 512KB, 266Mhz, Socket A), AMD Athlon MP 2600 (2.13GHz, 256KB, 266MHz FSB, Socket A), and AMD Athlon MP 2600 (2.13MHz, 256Kb, 266MHz, Socket A). Not sure what the difference is between the last two but they were listed seperately. Does anyone know if these processors will work with my mobo? Also, would I need another CPU fan? I've had this system for 2 years now and it's been fine but it seems to have gotten slower. It won't even run Sims 2 properly and lags really badly when I open Sims BodyShop. Buying a new PC is out of the question at this point but I could probably afford another processor. Thanks in advance.

Reply: (edit)For one thing, the FSB is "double pumped"...so a setting of 100mhz has an "effective" speed of 200mhz, & a setting of 133mhz has an "effective" speed of 266mhz. There are two different versions of the Athlon 1.4ghz CPU (Thunderbird core)...one runs at 14.0 x 100mhz/200FSB, & the other runs at 10.5 x 133mhz/266FSB. If your CPU's multiplier is unlocked, & have the 100mhz/200FSB version of the 1.4 Tbird, simply change the BIOS settings to 10.5 x 133mhz/266FSB. Don't get carried away with wanting to upgrade your CPU until you check the board specs & what CPUs it actually supports. Try the Asus website, or the HP website, or try searching your model number thru Google. The CPUs you mentioned are for use in motherboards that accept dual processors...the "MP" in the description is for "Multi-Processing" Asus A7N8X-X 1800+ @8x210mhz 512mb PC3200 Ti4200/8X 128mb WDC 60GB

Reply: (edit)BTW, if your system has slowed, it's probably because it needs a good house cleaning. Have you installed all the Windows Updates? Updated your drivers? Scanned & removed spyware & viruses? Emptied temp folder, temp internet files, history, etc? Cleaned the registry? Defragged the system? Reply: (edit)Unfortunately, when I purchased my computer HP did not inform me that they were not providing ANY restore disks or software CDs. When I contacted them after getting my computer they told me that if anything ever went wrong, I would have to send them the computer so they could use the partitioned part of the harddrive to restore, and they would not tell me how to do it myself. Since getting the computer I have changed my video card, my sound card, my modem, my RAM, and added a second harddrive. My DVD drive is actually defective so I need to replace that. I run a virusscanner every day, I regularly run scandisk and defrag, and delete temporary internet files. I'm not sure how to clean the registry though. I regulary update my drivers and have windows set to automatically load new updates. I have not backed up my system yet because the only output I have to do so is a floppy drive and I've found most of the time when I save files onto floppy they come out corrupted and cannot be read by other computers. I don't know if I will find my model number as I couldn't even find it listed on HPs website. My parents custom ordered it through Circuit City for my birthday. How can I tell if the multiplier is unlocked? When I looked at the readout in Belarc Advisor on the Processor info it said: 1400 megahertz AMD Athlon 128 kilobyte primary memory cache 256 kilobyte secondary memory cache But I'm not sure if that really had any effect or gives info on what type of Athlon it is. Maybe I should look at the order list and see if it says what type it is on the inventory list stuck to the box it came in. How do I edit my BIOS? I used to know how but I can't really remember. Oh, and my father wanted to know how to find out what the mobo is without dissecting the computer and without using Belarc or installing software that he thinks might be spyware. I really appreciate the responses. Thank you so much. (I'll go check out the ASUS support page as soon as I'm done with this post)

Reply: (edit)OK...try running CPUZ...just download & unzip, then double click on CPUZ.exe. It will identify your CPU & it's clock settings, & you can also get info about your motherboard & RAM. http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php You can clean your registry with Regcleaner: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download460.html You can remover spyware with Ad-Aware SE and Spybot - Search & Destroy v1.3: http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/ http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html And to remove accumulated garbage, try Crap Cleaner: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html Asus A7N8X-X 1800+ @8x210mhz 512mb PC3200 Ti4200/8X 128mb WDC 60GB

Reply: (edit)I have recently bought a computer with amd athlon 2600+. I have found out that amd athlon 2600+ is the equivalent to around 2.1-2.2Ghz. Dxdiag tells me that my processor is running at; AMD Athlon(tm), MMX, 3DNow, ~1.2GHz. It also sometimes says ~1.3GHz. I don't understand, did they give my the wrong processor?
