I want to upgrade from a 466Mhz, socket 7 to something near 1Ghz. Besides looking for another socket 7 processor, what else do I need to look for?

check out a company called powerleap. they
have all kinds of upgrade p3 chips all the
way up to 1.4ghz. the main thing you need
to know is what your motherboard can
support (as in front side bus;
100mhz,133mhz) they sell socket addaptors
that can supply the correct voltage and
multiplier setting for the upgrade chips..

Buy a new motherboard. I would go....

AMD Athlon and if you want to stay cheap, get the 200mhz FSB original Athlon, and 512meg PC133 memory.

I saw a motherboard with onboard everything, with AMD 1800XP for $89 at local computer fair. Doesn't really get any cheaper than that.

I don't think there's a Socket 7 version of the Celeron 466. It's probably a Socket 370 or Slot 1. Look here for possible CPU upgrades. Check your motherboard manual for compatibility. Good luck.

You're right..I think this is the info..

466 MHz Processor Core Speed
66 Mhz System Bus Speed
128 KB L2 Cache
MMX Media Enhancement Technology
Plastic Pin Grid Array (PPGA) Package (aka: Socket370)

I found out I can't upgrade a PPGA to a FC-PGA without an adapter or a new motherboard. I've never replaced a motherboard, what's involved? (I have a degree in Info. Sys., we learned the theory, but never physically did it!) The adapter is $25.. Any suggestions?

Proprietary systems (such as an HP) generally make it impossible to install a new motherboard. Since you mention it's a tower, however, there's a better chance than if it were a desktop model.

I think that you shouldn't bother with this old Pavilion system. Instead, get a new case, motherboard, and CPU, or look for a barebones system (motherboard and CPU already installed in the case).

Good luck.
