Subject: Updating my Processor - Questions.
OS: Windows XP
CPU/Ram: 2.8ghz/512mb RAM
Comment:

Hey Everyone,

My next update will be to get up to 1gig RAM I think. After that, my processor needs updating. I have some questions about this, though.

1) How much will it cost to get my processor changed professionally - there is no way I am going to try and do it myself.

2) Will I have problems if I change to a AMD processor from an Intel.

3) What are the best processors to be getting under both AMD and Intel labels.

4) How much will a mid and top of the range processor cost me?

5) Is there a new generation of processors just around the corner I should be holding out for before I buy?

Thanks Everyone!
Site is a fantastic resource.

You need to tell us your system in more detail.Mobo, psu etc

With the system you have(packard bell) it's not really worth it to upgrade.IMO.

You can't really change to AMD unless you get another mobo aswell.

Upgrading the cpu is not really worth it in your case(packard bell)

Price for changing cpu's is more dependant on where you live.

Adding another 512mb of ram probably won't improve things by much for you also.

The next best thing is going to be Dual core procs?

With more details we could advise you better.

I'm only running at 250w Power Supply, unfortunatley. I am planning to upgrade this next month. It's a good quality power supply though as I've the newly installed Radeon 9600 Pro and it's had no problems at all running from 250w.

I couldn't tell you my Motherboard in much detail, but I'm pretty sure it's INTEL so a change to AMD would certainly be problamatic. I am running Windows XP - Home Edition. The system itself was assembled in September 2004 by Packard Bell and I purchased it in December. The motherboard has one AGP Slot and two or three PCI slots. I'm running on a DVD-RW drive that doubles up as a CD-Rewriter. I've on-board sound and also use a DSL-USB Modem for the internet. I've got a 69gb Hard Drive [Only 1]. I believe the maximum ammount of RAM I can install in the system is 2GB but it could be less, I'm not entirely sure.

I tried to give you as much info I could. If there is a tool to tell me what MOBO I am running I could use that. Also, if possible I'd like to spend no more than £150 on a processor upgrade, £200 at a push. Is that even possible? I know very little about hardware costs and installation costs int his field.

Thanks in Advance,

Download and install everest. Once installed load the program, hit report after choosing hardware related pages button.

The exercise takes a few seconds, after it is generated copy and paste it in your next response.

Do not type anything in this space.
