Subject: updating BIOS
Comment:

I'm having some problems with my computer that started up when I installed a new memory chip.

Some setting is wrong in my BIOS which makes the memory unreadable when the DRAM frequency is set at 133. I want it set at 133 because setting DRAM to 100 slows CPU frequency to 100 as well.

I can't find any other settings to change how memory functions in the American Megatrends Amibios (c) 2001, any experts on this? I am certain I don't have a hardware problem, so you know.

How do you go about updating BIOS and how likely is it that I will mess up my harddrive? Can I even do it without losing data? I don't think my BIOS is particularly old but maybe that would fix it.

THANKS

you have to go to the website for your motherboard manufacturer and download a bios flash. they'll have instructions on how to flash your bios, but I think most(I know mine did) require you to boot to DOS with a win98 bootdisk and run the flash utility. You won't lose any data from your hard drive. the danger in flashing your bios is that unless you have a dual bios motherboard, if there is a problem when you flash the bios, like the computer freezing or a power loss, the motherboard will be useless. you'll need to send it to the manuafacturer to have it reflashed. Just be careful and pay attention and you won't have any problems.
