Subject: two CPUs on single motherboard???OS: winxp sp2CPU/Ram: p4 \640 gbManufacturer/Model: msi ms-6526 |
Comment: Currently im having a pc that’s 3yrs old. Im having a P4 1.7GHz ,400MHzFSB 256K L2 cache socket 478 CPU . im planning to upgrade . im thinking to use two CPUs in a single motherboard ie I want to use my existing P4 1.7GHz ,400MHzFSB 256K L2 cache socket 478 CPU + a new P4(>1.2GHz) processor on a single chipset motherboard\server chipset. Please suggest me a good chipset motherboard\server chipset that supports two CPUs (P4 1.7GHz ,400MHzFSB socket 478 CPU + a new P4_ _ _socket _ _ _) thanks vivek

Reply: (edit)And what would be the purpose of this? Are you actually building a server? You will not get better performance by running two CPUs. There's not a cummulative effect...in other words, running 2 x 1.7GHz is not the same as running 1 x 3.4GHz. The system performance will be the same as if it's a single 1.7GHz, UNLESS you run apps/programs/multi-tasking that can make use of two CPUs. If you insist on doing this, make sure to upgrade your power supply.

Reply: (edit)It would be eaiser to buy a dual core processer same thing. As also jam has said it wont make it run better.I have never heard of a motherboard that suports 2 cpu's.

Reply: (edit)gmanych needs to get out more...there are lots of dual-cpu boards on the market. You will get some amount of performance increase in some apps and more in others. Most of time the CPU usage is not the problem, but the virtual memory is the cause of slow performance...it is far better to add RAM over CPUs. The processor stepping #'s have to match or it will not work at all.
