I'm working on this laptop for a friend. They said it was shutting down randomly. When I worked on it, I just just got a BSOD with Unmountable_boot_drive. So I checked the HD w/ the manufactures diagnostic & it failed the SMART test. I replaced the HD & reinstalled XP, but it kept restarting through out the install. Now Xp is installed but most of the time it will shutdown before it even finishes booting. I could feel the CPU getting hot. I know dust is a big problem in Toshiba laptops so I took out the heatsink , but there was hardly any dust. I cleaned it & applied new thermal grease anyway, but it's still restarting. I feel the CPU getting way to hot, but the fan is working. I'm out of ideas. Any suggestions would be welcome.
When it comes to overheating, there's more to worry about than the CPU... overall system temp, HDD temp etc all have an effect. You say the fans are working... good... but is there sufficient airflow? this is key to the discharge of heat. Check this out and reply back.
