I have a Gateway m-1617 that I purchased in 2007. Ever since I can remember I have had the problem with it getting too hot to even touch and soon after it will shut off. I tend to have it plugged into the ac adapter most of the time. I can usually have it running for about a half hour before it will just randomly shut off on me. I can turn it back in right away and then it will power off again right away and not turn back on for 10 minutes or more. Please someone tell me what you think might be the problem. I am thinking I'm going to try replacing the fan. I'd like to check to see how many rpm's the fan is running at before I start to replace it. please if you have any input let me know

Yeah you've got a problem with the fan or something. Excessive heat isn't good for electronic components. If this would've started happening shortly after I bought it I would've taken it back to the store.

shollfelder,
Did you replace the fan or have someone replace it? Was that the problem? I am having the same problem with my M-1617.
Any advice for me?

although I wouldn't think it would get that hot the laptop could just run hot, I have a Toshiba laptop that once melted my mouse cable to my desk! you can buy a cooling plate to set the laptop on with little fans built into it if it is going to be somewhat stationary like on a desk or something but they can be a hassle to carry around...
