I'm really sorry if this is the most stupid thing that these guys who know what they'r saying has to say. What is the best and max temperature of CPUs? Is there a general temperature or does it vary from one CPU type to the next?

If so, any hints as to the optimal/and boundary temperatures for an 1800xp??

I really appreciete this guys, I'm sure your life would be a lot easier without pests like me :)

Max. xp 1800 die temperature could be 90C or 95C. If you get below 50C that's great, 50-60C be cautious, above 60C - you have to do something to decrease it! Note that not all all CPU temperature readings are accurate, so it's better to keep your temps. lower.

I've just been suggested to get my CPU temp to about 40C - SLK-800 with some Arctic Silver III Compound I've been recommended. Is this a good choice? I would also like to do some overclocking, so bare that in mind please.

I have an xp1800 athlon, and with a volcano 8 $49 (AUSD) and with the use of multipliers on a Soltek 75kav $149 (AUSD) it now running a cool 41c overclocked to an xp2000+ wothout pushing the FSB up at all. So we don't need that much cash at all. :)

What are your case temps? Case cooling is the most important thing. If your case temps are too high, your HSF can't do it's job.

A Volcano 7 with generic paste should get you to 40-50 C and cost $16.50 on Pricewatch.

-20 is nice and 90 is the die temp. How can you get -20? you ask? USE VAPOCHILL!

With cheap paste my XP2100 Tbred B runs at 30C idle and 33C full load - Volcano 7+ heatsink on lowest setting. If I put it to full speed my idle temp goto 28C and full load 31C. The motherboard is usually around 29C whilst the CPU is under full load and I'm using one CPU fan. I think it's down to the thin layer of thermal paste somehow.
