I have a amd athlon (tbred) 2000+ with stock cooling. I live in pennsylvania. the temp right now is 66F at 1130 at night.

55-60 (°C) is definitely high for the CPU's idle temp, even though it is 66°F there. Are you overclocking the CPU?, do you have a thermal paste between the CPU and your heatsink or a thermal pad.

Try another monitor like Sandra or Everest Home Edition to see if it reports similar temps.

I'd say that's too warm, especially considering the room temp (19C). If your readings are accurate, a 40C system temp is higher than it should be. How many case fans do you have & how are they configured?

Just for a comparison, my overclocked 1.33 Tbird is idling at 56C with a system temp of 36C. But it's fairly warm here tonite...about 80F (27C). It usually idles in the mid to upper 40s in a 68F (20C) room

I was using my overclocked 1800+ a little while ago & it was idling in the mid 30s...but that's with a cooling program called VCOOL.

i also only have one 80mm instake fan on my side window blowing towards my cpu. i have my wires an stuff pulled back so the air will go towards the cpu fan(stock).i don't really want to spend money on a new hsf but if this temp is decreasing the life of my cpu i gues i have to. ALSO...my borther is giving me his barton 2500. he says his run like 60C with stock. but he says bartons run hotter than other non-barton cpu's

I have a xp2000+ too, and it runs about 49c under load. I got an MSI motherboard, and PC alert4 is pretty accurate. you may want to get a new heatsink/fan, and also buy a rear-out blowing fan, all that air will heat up inside if there is nothing pushing it out. good luck

256mb DDRx2 (2100/2700)

geforce4 Ti4200 w/64mb

pretty darn quiet PC!

What core do you have? Those Palamino's get hot as hell. My idle temps on a hot day can reach 48-50c (overclocked or not) and I have big copper heatsink. But my machine doesn't seem to go over about 56 so I don't worry about it because it's been that way for 2yrs. CPU's are cheap. When it burns up buy another one. As long as your machine runs fine stop worrying. If it gets to hot take the side panel off.

TECHZAPORT OUT!!!
