Lol, hi. Well, I was recovering my drive yesterday, so I took the side off the case and detached the fan connecotr (in the case window). IN doing this I also detached the cpu fan's power. Not realising it was still off, I switched my Athlon 2500xp on, and chatted to bro on the phone. It blue screened after maybe 30 minutes or so. So I restarted off, and went into bios to check temps. I jumped out of my seat, touched heatsink to check, burned finger a little, and switched it all off to let it cool....

Temps read 256 degrees fahrenheit. INSANE!

Well, I left to cool, and now I am running with fan on again, no problems!

Needless to say I shall be a little more AWARE from now on!

I imagine Francis just caught it in time to save the processor. Sounds like he did a proper heatsink install too; even a heatsink without a working fan helps a lot.

Still, that's another of the "don't try this at home" deals.

Stuff the cpu, how about my finger! I burned it!

I honestly don't know. What I do know is it was excruciatingly hot. When I did turn the fan on, it blew hot air for a few seconds. So I switched it off and left it off for while.

My hsf is a coolermaster cylindrical type. And the heatsink is a copper base one, it's nice. But I too would have expected the machine to have fired that baby. Not so though!

YOu know, lol, skipcox, I am just glad I managed to save it from death! It would have SUCKED to have to buy an XP now. THey have gone up dramatically in price recently, a 2500xp is now more than it was when I bought one 6 months ago!

Did the same thing with my <a style='text-decoration: none; border-bottom: 3px double;' href="http://www.serverlogic3.com/lm/rtl3.asp?si=22&k=graphics%20card" onmouseover="window.status='graphics card'; return true;" onmouseout="window.status=''; return true;">graphics card after a new case transfer. For got to plug in the power cable.

I was getting some awfull lowd bleeps for about an hour before I realised what I had done.

XxxFrancisxxxUSA, can you remember those few second when you amended your error and restarted your machine just waiting for the crash. What a relief when all boots up and everythings fine.

Your one luck son of a gun

I don't know about that board but a lot
have a build in temperature monitor to shut
the cpu down if it gets too hot. Maybe that
saved you!
