I'd just like to ask about a "phenomenon" that occurs on only the old rig. Doesn't ever happen on the newer machines.
First off, specs of the machine in question:
PIII 1000MHz overclocked to 1.33GHz.
Asus Slot 1 mobo, VIA 133mhz chipset.
1GB of PC-133 memory
Radeon 9800 Pro
x-fi
2 hard drives
Jukebox case with 400w Antec psu, 26A on the 12v line.

The problem: This is purely a jukebox PC. Part of its job as a jukebox is heavy MP3 encoding. Whenever I click on the encode button, the CPU usage meter unsurprisingly hits 100%. Whenever the CPU hits 100%, I can hear the case fans dramatically slow down, as if they're not receiving enough power. The 400w Antec PSU has 26A on the 12 volt rail. The PSU isn't at fault. I still get the fan slowdown even when I test it with the 600w OCZ psu from my other puter. Taking off the overclock doesn't help. Should I be worried about this, or is this just a common thing for older PCs? Thanks

"as a jukebox is heavy MP3 encoding"

I'd say that's the problem right there. Seems like the processor is showing its age with newer programs that demand more processing power.

I think old system like P3 setup demand more from +3.3 and +5 more than +12v.... It could be due to the age of the capacitor and voltage regulator module on the motherboard, resulting less current and voltage apply to the fan....

I have the same thing on the familys 400Mhz Celeron, When it gets under load (Not uncommon for a 400Mhz celeron running XP) you hear the fans change speed. Even if you just open the start menu, heh. Its been running like this for 2 and a half years so I'm not really worried. I agree with TMP-Man ,it is probably the voltage regulators or capacitors on the motherboard getting a bit weary.

Makes sense. Thank you everyone. :)
Cobra, this P3 @ 1.33 encodes MP3s faster than my 2.0GHz P4.

One of the machines must not be set up right. Guess which one.
