Subject: Temps?? C2D what temps to believe
OS: XP pro sp2
CPU/Ram: Core 2 Duo E2160 @ 1.8ghz
Manufacturer/Model: home build
Comment:

I have a few issues with temperature readings on my new system.

I have just put together this system,

E2160 1.8ghz @ 2.8ghz (stock volts) thermalight heatsink and fan
Abit AB9 Pro mobo
2x 1 gb ddr2 667 ram, set at 1:1 ratio with cpu both at 312mhz

My query is this, after reading for days on the subject HOW can i tell my true CPU temp, should i goo with the CPU reading or core readings?

Everest ultimate reports cpu (tcase) 33 on idle, and both cores around 40 degrees c.
Speedfan shows temps of 22 degrees c on the cores
And CORETEMP 0.95 shows two different values depending if i use the "delta to junction" option... basically core temps is showing with T junction value of 85 i have 60 degrees left before throttling occures. CPU cores are at 40 ish degrees..

TAT will not work with this mobo, and is not made for desktop cpu's anyway as the t junction temps are set at 85 or 100 degrees.... I dont know where the throttle point (temp) is on this cpu die... I dont fancy throttling the pc to try and work out which temp application is more accurate by finding the thermal protection value / level.. and scaling it agains each programme... i dont want to cook anything up.

Basically what im trying to say is why cant we get temp reading the same accross the board on all programmes? I know they all use diffrent ways of calculating the cpu temp etc.. but why 20 degrees difference..

Intel advised to use the CPU reading rather than the core readings, and not to worry if my cores are higher than the cpu (tcase) reading.

Theres a lot of misinformation about regarding this problem caused with the e4300 and e2160 / e2140 cpu's... date does affect as manufaturing of the chips changed from L2 stepping to M-0 stepping... and results seem different according to what bios and mobo is in use... AGGGHHHHH!! lol

try reading this thread.... http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums...

oh should i add, i have 120mm case fan, and 2 80mm case fans, hooked upto an aerogate fan controller...

Using a huntkey 550w PSU

Also running an 8800 gts 320 mb gpc cd.

The easiest thing to do would be run 2 instance of "Prime95" and also run "Throttlewatch" to see if the CPU throttles under heavey load. I would also use CoreTemp to check for full load temperatures after 15 minutes of 2x Prime95...

The 22°C SpeedFan reading sure is odd, considering the ambient temperature is normally around 10°C lower than the CPU temperature & I'm sure your room temperature isn't 12°C.

CoreTemp & Everest readings are most likely accurate with the 40°C idle figure reported. Eitherway, I wouldn't be worried too much with a 40°C CPU temp. BTW, what is reported in the BIOS -- 40°C?

yep, bios reports 40 -/+ and so does the uGuru utility that comes bundled with the AB9 Pro mobo...

Just seems very odd that a lot of people with c2d's are having problems reading a true and accurate figure..

So really i should use something to stress the cpu and find out the throttle point / temp...

Its not a major problem, just damn annoying that different softwares report different temps, with a 20 degree difference.. I knew speedfan couldnt be right, the ambient temp is around 20 degrees in my pc room, so there was no way it could be dissapating heat that fast lol.

Will investigate some more, as it only seems to be on certain revision Exxx chips..

Intel basically say to go with the CPU (tcase) reading and not the core readings... which make my cpu idle at about 30 and get to around 40 on full load.

In addition to the above, for folks that don't know the conversion to farenheit, 22c is 71.6F. That is pretty unlikely.
