Temperature too hot

Specs: Windows XP, Intel Pentium 4 2.00RAM
Hi all! I have Intel Pentium 4 Prescott 3.00 ghz and 2.00gb RAM.My temperature of cpu was 40° degrees when was idle and 50-55° when i was playing games.One day i took off my fan and cleaned the dust from heatsink(?).I put back on fan and now i have 60-65° when its idle and when im playing games its 75-80 sometimes 85 degrees and my computer is slower than before! I intended to overclock cpu to 3.20 or 3.40 ghz but now i cant its to high temperature! Pls help! Thanks

Did you put new thermal paste on the heatsink before you re-attached it to the processor? Did you follow the directions for the paste? Is the fan spinning freely?

No i didnt.But i didnt took off heatsink from processor! I just took off fan from heatsink and not heatsink from processor.

You put the fan on backwards, turn it around or make sure you plugged the fan in and it is spinning.
