I'm testing a 1.8 athlon xp right now that's clocked to nearly 2.1 specs. Ambient (system temp) reads 31C and the CPU is 52C. I'm also running a new Cooler Master HSC-V62 cooler, which is a skived fin copper cooler with a variable-speed fan. The fan will run in the 3000-6000 RPM range. It's currently cranking at about 5500. A good coating of silver HS compound really helps, and the underside of this Cooler Master is nearly a mirror finish (factory lapped?), so it seems to be doing a fairly efficient job of cooling the CPU. Sounds like your system temp is really high. My rule is, put as many good case fans in as you can (Antec makes good 80mm fans that are QUIET) and get the best CPU cooler you can get your hands on, and see if you don't bring those temps down 10 degrees or so.

That's absurdly hot man ... you might even destroy your CPU that way. Get a very good heatsink on that sucker FAST! At least get that core temp down to 40c.

I'd also recommend some case fans. Without air flow in your case the cpu cooler can't really do its job. Here's a good article on where's best to place them: http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/airflowtweak/

Before you go jump off a cliff like Moto makes it seem you should do, if your system is running at an unsafe temperature it will simply stop functioning, you're not going to burn your CPU even at 70C, that could also be as low as 60, those external sensors aren't very accurate. Definatly get some case fans in there (intake front, exhaust back) since you are running rather hot, but the best thing to do is to put your system through a stress test. Run 3Dmark2001 looped for several hours, if your system doesn't crash I'd say you're quite stable even at those high temps...

The AMD will work untill it frys and that is at 90C. My 1800+ runs as hot as 65C under a full load and system temps at 43c . this is with a lot of fans .Add a intake at bottom of case and a exhaust at the back near the top this should help cool it down some

lol...let me tell u about my computer...grab some popcorn and a coke its a good story. July 27 excited like a little school girl as i goto computer show to replace my acer 1995 computer, 200 mhz 32mb edo ram -_- ect. with an athlon 2000+ ddr 512 geforce 2. my cpu temp ran at constant 51c...had to fans that suck air outa computer. had retail heat sink in it. Now lets continue with the story 2 weeks after i get it the power supply blows. it takes my hard drive and cd burner with it. I get it replace under warrnety wit hthe good old lads at comp usa. take it home 10 days later, i discover it has a rare disease where it cant scan the data sections, theres phyiscal damage. take it to compusa they have no replacements so i send out to western digital to get a replacement. 9 days later it comes. I hook it up i update my drivers get everything up to par again. then jsut as i reach to install CS i hear something drop...its my heatsink!!!! about 5 secs later maybe more maybe less computer shuts down. i open it up fixz the heatsink turn it on motherboard is dead no beebs no nothing. so in about 9 hrs i have to take the cpu to compusa to see if they will test it. what im worried about if it will be alright. do u know how long the athlon xp2000 last without a heat sink...i had a couple bays opened as well...it makes for good circulation with the case fan taht sucks air outa it. well theres part one and 2 of my story lets see what else happens...hopefully someone can reasure me my cpu is fine...cant aford both motherboard andd cpu...and plz dont BS me...

A good temp range for this CPU is 40-50C.

Your temps seem hot and if it were me, I’d spend $20 and get a Volcano 7.

That's seems a little high. I also have an XP2100+ on an Asus A7V333. I have it in an Antec SX840 case with a 400watt PS. I'm running two 80mm case fans in the case one in the lower front and other in the upper back. I running the stock HSF. My office stays about 72-76F. My mobo temps stay about 24-27C, cpu 44C Idle/ 52C under Heavy Load. They haven't ever gotten over 52C. Get a better cooler, case fans and some good silver thermal paste. I scraped off the pre-applied thermal pad junk that came on the cooler, put on some Artic Silver III. Your goal should be stay under 60C. Get a cool with acopper core if possible. Lotta guys are using the Volcano 7, but they are somewhat loud. Here's a link to the stock HSF that comes on the XP2000+ and above. It's the exact cooler that came with my Retail Boxed Athlon Xp2100+. I would get the better one with the Copper core. It's rated upto XP2600+. http://www.dynatron-corp.com/products/cpucooler/cpucooler_model.asp?id=1 http://www.dynatron-corp.com/ http://www.dynatron-corp.com/products/cpucooler/cpucooler_model.asp?id=11
Later,
David.

What do you mean by system temp? Is that the same as case temp or board temp? If so, you need better case cooling. Ideally, your case temps should be within a few degrees of room temp. If your case temp is 47C (117F), your case cooling is either inadequate or improperly setup. Case temps should range in the high 20's to low 30's. If you can get down into this range, your CPU temp will drop accordingly. IMHO, the HSF is rarely to blame, even if it's a retail/cheap one.

I just checked my temps thru SANDRA...my 1.2ghz Duron (clocked at 1.32ghz) is running at 43.3C, my board temp is 22.4C, & the room temp is 21.7C.

My 2100+ runs at a current 46c unless I am playing games or doing stuff that takes a lot of processing. My room temp is 72F and my case temp is 28c 82F. I am using the boxed fan from my old 1600+ xp (i think its 5400rpm) and I have 3 case fans. Sounds like you have either no circulation in your case or you need more thermal goop stuff on your heatsink. 70c is way too hot.
