well is 31c good with thermal paste and with a cooler master cpu cooler i have a 2.53 p4 and i'm not sure if the thermal paste is working can you tell me whats good to use to cool it even more. thank you

How low do you want to go? 31C is pretty decent.

Every cpu becomes hot when working and 31°C isn't that much more than room temperature.

The most you can do is to use a good thermal paste and a good heatsink/fan combination. So far I think your's is really good.

BTW:
As example, my Athlon TBird 1,2GHz never goes below 35°C, even when idle and with special cooling software. At full load it goes up to 55-60°C !!!

No P4 512k cache would idle 31C at normal room temp (20-24C)with air cooling. System/board temp at 31C may be. Use/excercise common sense.

lap it to cool it more. there are many sites that tell how to lap.

That temp's almost too good to be true. As real_cool suggested (sort of), make sure you're not mistaking your system temp for your processor temp. If you're not, what is your system temp being reported as?
