Can't answer that without knowing the make/model of your motherboard. You could also use more RAM.

The Celeron-950 is a Pentium III Coppermine-based chip. The Celeron-500 could either be a Pentium II Mendocino- or PIII Coppermine-based chip.

Download CPU-Z and determine which core your Celeron is based upon. If your current CPU is a "Coppermine" based Celeron, then your board will take the 950 without difficulty.

If it is a "Mendocino" based Celeron, then depending on the board you may:
-have to update the BIOS to use the 950MHz Celeron
-may not have to update anything at all (if your board is based on the i810/815 chipset)
-or you may not be able to use the 950MHz Celeron at all (if your board's chipset is older, such as the i440LX/LXR/EX/ZX-66, and doesn't support CPUs with a 100MHz FSB).

My Super P3:
Pentium III-S 1.4GHz @ 1.58GHz, 512K L2
X800XT All-in-wonder, overclocked to 580/600.
