I have an older Compaq laptop with 128mb PC100 laptop RAM (plan to upgrade to 256mb), a 6gb hard drive (plan to upgrade to like 13gb or something with a bit more space), and a 233mhz AMD K6-2 CPU, according to CPU-Z. What is the likelyhood that i could upgrade this to a faster CPU? The faster the better, of course. Unfortunately I dont know the model number and the idiot i bought it from had peeled off all the stickers of model number and such. What are the chances of upgrading the CPU and if any, how far??? Thanx.

PS. I paid $70 for the laptop, including a working battery, 6gb hard drive, and a nice leather case. Good deal? Bad deal? average? just curious if i got ripped off. thanx.

Laptops are not designed for CPU upgrades, also check the BIOS does not have a limitation on HDD size.

The K6-2 mobile runs at a much lower voltage than a desktop K6-2. Most desktop models run at 2.2v or 2.4v...the mobile version runs at something like 1.9v (I have a mobile K6/2 475MHz in my FIC 503+ machine). If you can find a mobile CPU, you *might* be able to upgrade (check the board specs), but I doubt the laptop would support the higher voltages required by the desktop CPU, & even if it did, my guess is it would have overheating problems

I think you paid a little too much for that thing considering you are going to be spending some more money upgrading it.

Depending on the exact processor in that laptop at the moment, one from the top half of the above listed should work, the kicker is, that laptop is not worth spending any more money on in my opinion. Goodluck !!!

Here is a good compatibility list You will have to ID your laptop. You may have to browse Compaq's site and get a visual ID. Probably only a couple of models were equipped with a K6 233. A K6-2+ 450 might be had on Ebay cheaply enough to make it worth while.
