Subject: Strange or not?OS: Win XP SP1CPU/Ram: XP 2400+/2 x 256MB Corsai |
Comment: Hi Is this strange or not, when I run a FSB of 199 everything is fine, if I run it at 200, I get minor data corruption, ie. progs. stop working and need re-installation? I know the difference is marginal, almost invisible, but I would like to know for my own knowledge as to why this is. So if anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate your input. BTW when I did this, I had the vcore set to 1.75 and the multiplier at 11 which would give me very similar resulting frequencies, also, there was no difference in temps, both speeds idle at 35C and peak at 39C. Here is a list of all my components. ASUS A7N8X Deluxe 2.0 AMD Athlon XP 2400+ 2 x 256MB Corsair XMS3200LL (TWINX) ASUS 9280VS Ti-4200 128MB 8X SB Live Value 1 x WD Raptor 36GB SATA HDD 1 x Seagate 40GB 5400RPM ATA HDD 1 x Acer 20x12x40 CDRW 1 x Panasonic 40x CD-ROM 1 x FDD Thanks in advance. Kind Regards Adam

Reply: (edit)that may seem strange but it is how it happens. A computer is similar to a pane of glass that may be able to hold a 5kg stone all day long but if you replace the stone with one that weighs 5.01kg, the glass breaks immediately. I would change the multiplier to 8 or 9 and see what happens then. If you get the same 199=good, 200=bad then the problem is the mobo and if you can increase vdd (chipset voltage) I would do that. If the problem goes away then you need more vcore. As long as your load temps stay at say 50C or less, you can go to 1.8v or 1.9v safely. getting 11x199 at 1.75v is not too shabby so I would guess the cpu vcore is the problem. I assume your pci bus is locked at 33mhz. Make sure that it is.

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the advice johnoh, might give that a try on the weekend, and yeah the PCI bus is locked at 33MHz. I've had a look at some of the vdd mods out there and seeing that I'm not so good with a soldering iron, I will stick with 199FSB. I wonder what would happen if I threw a XP3200+ on it.
