OS: 2003 Server / Xp Pro Sp2
CPU/Ram: AMD 3000+ 1024MB
Comment:
I've just bought and assembled a new computer. evga 680i sli mobo, e6600 cpu, 3GB Corsair 6400 ram(2x512, 2x1024), 650w coolermaster psu and an antec 900 case and 4 250GB WD HDs (2 mirrored with windows, 2 striped)

Running two instances of prime95 (one for each core as the help file recommends) at 100% cpu usage it's running at 60C. This seems very high to me. Should I turn off the smartfan and run the cpu fan at full all the time?

Turning the fan to 100% reduces the temperature by 10C. Idles at 40C and maxes out at 50C.

There are ways to reduce the CPU temperature.

1. Wipe out the stock thermal paste on the stock heatsink and apply a thin layer of arctic silver 5...
2. Have all cables wrapped so nothing blocks the air flow...
3. Have 1 front intake fan and 1 rear exhaust fan...
4. If the CPU does not throttle under heavy load, then there is nothing to worry about since you can't overheat Core 2 duo to death...
