Hi chaps, i have a packard bell pulsar
runnning win 2k on a pentioum 200mhz mmx &
192mb ram (though the motherboard only
registers 128mb at its max load) does any one
have any ideas on how to bump up speed at a
minimum of cost, for example by overclocking
or through specialist software ?
thanks in advance.

If you changed your OS to WIN98SE, things might run a little faster.

You might be able to increase your RAM.

A PCI/IDE adapter card and an ATA133 HDD might add more zip.

Some MOBOs from this era can be overclocked but I don't know if Packard Bell used them.

You're already running TOO much RAM...I can almost guarantee that your board's chipset only caches 64mb. As Badboy suggested, Win98 might work a little better for you

If you wanna overclock to 233, just change your multiplier setting to 1.5x...the CPU will interpret this setting as 3.5x & it'll clock up to 233 (3.5 x 66mhz)

Yeah, more info would help (any markings or labels on motherboard).

These old boards often have a slew of jumpers and/or dip switches on them to set voltage, multiplier and fsb speed. Depending on the chipset used, memory in excess of 64Mb can also slow the machine down.

let's be real about this, there's no point in getting up to a 33 mhz gain..what's that going to accomplish?

Probably not much; but, I was happy with the performance increase when I clocked a P60 to 66Mhz. That 6Mhz made a big difference on IE performance and download speeds that was real.

Hi Skip, how's it going? Hey, I wanna compliment you again on the great ChillVent review(s) & your page in general..keep up the good work ;)

Tbird4, you can say that about a lot of overclocking projects...what's the point of taking a 2000mhz CPU & running it at 2100mhz? Do you really think you'll see a difference...it's only a 5% increase? Clocking a 200mhz CPU to 233mhz is a 16.5% increase...

ValuPC, you may find some helpful info here:

Thanks guys ! After a bit of research (thanks
for the toms hardware link !) and after
looking in the trusty motherboard manual I
shifted a jumper and my CPU is now running
stable at 233mhz. (this is the most my mother
board can take) Thanks a lot !

I had an old intel based motherboard running two SIMM chips (64 MB each). The system originally had a 233 Mhz Pentium MMX. I later switched it with an AMD K6-2 500 (running at 233 since this was the max the board would support). I took benchmarks before and after the change. I recall the AMD had much better FPU ("Floating Point Unit") ability, which made it more graphically inclined, even while running at the same speed. Also, the AMD ran very cool.
