Can anyone advise me please? I want to change the processor on a pc from a AMD-K62 to a celeron. I went on the motherboard site to look up compatible processors. This is a Soyo 5EMA +1 motherboard. According to the table I saw it would appear it is a socket 7 motherboard and will take a pentiumII up to speed 233mhz only??? I can't quite beleive it nor do I pretend to understand it! Does anyone know if this will work with a celeron and up to which speed etc. I am a novice and don't even know how to fit a motherbaord so was thinking of getting a professional in to do that part. Any help appreciated.
thanks

Some socket 7's will take AMD k6II's up to 400mhz. They set the jumper to 2x and AMD recognises it as 6x (6 x 66 = 396mhz).

Your motherboard will not take a Celeron. You have a socket 7. Celerons are socket PGA370. Completely different.

Your best bet is to start pricing a new motherboard, ram and cpu, and probably a new powersupply also. Those are the parts you'll need to replace when upgrading. And I wouldn't waste money on a Celeron. The Amd Athlon is pretty cheap at the lower end (1600 xp I picked up for $39 new!).

It all depends how much money you have, and how much speed you want. Since you now have an ATX motherboard and case, upgrading to a Socket A motherboard and CPU would be your best bet for high performance.

But if you just want a little more speed, any of the following would do: K6-2 550 (good), or a K6-3 450 (better) or a k6-2+ (best). You probably won't find a K6-2+ faster than a 450 these days. A K6-3+ would be the best possible Socket 7 CPU, but they are overpriced.

About the only place you can find any of these CPU's these days is Ebay.

The standard K6-2 500 is available at Newegg .com, http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-166&depa=0

The K6-2+ & K6-3 are way too expensive. You should be able to pick up a K6-2/500 for under $20

You can get lucky. I've seen K6-3 450's go for $15.00 recently at the overclockers.com classifieds. But they generally get bid up beyond what they are worth on Ebay. I was able to pick up a couple of K6-2+ 450's for a little over $25.00 each just over a year ago by bidding carefully.

On the other hand, I recently saw a K6-3+ 550 sell for $170.00 on Ebay! Complete insanity for such a slow CPU. Makes me wish I had a stash to sell on Ebay though! ;)
