Going to a S775 CPU will also mean getting a new board, DDR2 RAM, & PCI-E video card...at least it should. I don't see any point in upgrading to S775 if you plan on sticking with DDR1 & AGP.

It really depends why you wanna upgrade. You definitely have a crappy motherboard. I wouldn't wish an SiS based board on my worst enemy...lol. And although the 6600GT certainly isn't a bad card, it's definitely losing ground. If you're gonna go for a complete rebuild, why would you even consider a P4 when the Core2 is SO much faster & not that much more money?

Getting another S478 board would be a waste of money. And upgrading your CPU just because your "mate's" *may* be faster is a poor reason. The Core2 beats anything currently available but if you look at the GHz rating, it's much "slower" than either of the 2 CPU's you've mentioned. Look at the difference between a "low end" 2.4GHz Conroe & a 3.4GHz Prescott:

http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html?modelx=33&model1=432&model2=460&chart=174

If all the rest of the hardware was exactly the same except that you have the SiS based board & your "mate" has an Intel based board, his system would beat your's. SiS based boards suck.

I see your CPU is overclocked & the FSB at 220MHz. What about the RAM...is it also running at 220MHz? Even if it is, your board doesn't support running in dual channel mode. Your CPU at 220MHz (880FSB) has a max bandwidth of 7040MB/sec, but your RAM is lagging way behing at 3520MB/sec...& if it's only running at 200MHz, it's even worse at 3200MB/sec.

Boards based on the nForce4 are the fastest, with Intel based boards a close 2nd. VIA & SiS based boards should be avoided unless you're on a budget & performance isn't your primary concern.
