I read (on the Biostar website) that the (or their) Intel 845 chipset in a Socket 423 motherboard will support up to an Intel Pentium 4 2.0GHz processor.
The Intel 845 chipset in a Socket 478 motherboard will ALSO support an Intel Pentium 4 2.0GHz processor (although it can support a faster processor).
Is this the exact SAME Intel Pentium 4 2.0GHz processor? Also if you happen to know of a URL where this is illustrated, I would be most appreciative.
The 423 socket 2 Ghz is Willamette core and the 478 2Ghz is offered both Northwood and Willamette. The 478 goes all the way to 3.2EE in Northwood, and 3.2E in Prescott, provided your motherboard could support.
Your 845 only supports 400FSB, the 845PE 533, the 850 533, 865 and 875 800FSB.

I'm not an Intel guy but I believe the Socket 423 was short lived & was quickly replaced by the Socket 478.
Socket 423 boards are dirt cheap...I see them listed all the time for about $20...but the socket 423 P4 is more expensive than a socket 478 P4. For example...the Socket 423 1.5ghz P4 lists for $155 at Pricewatch, while the Socket 478 lists for $90

jam, It's call business. When you are not a geek and your 423 dropped dead, you will pay whatever the asking price.
It's like paying $20 for a 1986 Porche 944 Turbo oil filter.
