Subject: smell coming off my compOS: XPCPU/Ram: 2.4C/512 |
Comment: What does it mean if some bad smell is coming off my computer (cpu possibly) but the cpu temp (as report by MBM5 and AiBooster) is only at around 30? Hint: I overclocked my computer from 2.4C to 3.12GHZ without any additional cooling. Specs P4 2.4C Asus P4P800 Deluxe Infineon PC3200 RAM One case fan

Reply: (edit)Cover your nose and notify the appropriate authorities ASAP, someone may be cooking "something illegal" inside your PC case....lol Just turn it off, disconnect all cables, allow the odor to disappear and open the case to see what is burning. ___________________________ The greatest risk is not taking one

Reply: (edit)As an electronics technician, if you smell a real funky burning smell, your letting the smoke out and this is not good. I've never heard of a "new smell" before, but I will admit most of the stuff I work on is nowhere near the speed and performance of computers. So the "new smell" might be true, but I've never smelled it on any of my computers either. When all else fails, beat the %*#$! out of it!!!

Reply: (edit)I didn't use any other fan except the intel stock fan. I know 3.12ghz is pretty high but it only has a idle temp at 28 and 45 when multitasking (as reported by mbm5 and AiBooster) There's no smoke coming out, just some bad smell. By the way, the smell was gone after i changed it back to 2.4ghz. My computer runs as smoothly as before.

Reply: (edit)Open the case, and have a look if you see any blackness etc... We can't tell you this yet. I wouldn't have thought the stock fan could handle that o/c but i dont know. GeForce FX5200 128Mb AMD Barton 2800 Asus A7N8X E-Deluxe AERO 7 LITE CPU fan 512 DDRAM PC2700

Reply: (edit)The funky smell means you were wearing down whatever was smelling (probably CPU). So yes you probably shortened the life span of the CPU. Will you ever see a problem? Hard to tell you that. But later in time, if you suddenly start getting weird things happening, it may be your CPU. When all else fails, beat the %*#$! out of it!!!

Reply: (edit)it's probably a capacitor cooking. They are filled with some funkie liquid that smells when they get too hot. look for a leaky capacitor on the board. Also, it could be a capictor in the power supply.

Reply: (edit)Does this smell like burning tires?? Can you describe what this "smell" smells like?? If it smells like the burning tires then that would be silicon burning. Asus A7N8X Deluxe 2.0 ATI 9800 Pro AMD Barton 2500+ 1024 PC3200 Ram 120gig Maxtor HD Audigy 2 420 watt psu

Reply: (edit)acyf I have a satellite receiver. Every now and then I get a burnt electrical smell from it. It still works fine. The point I'm trying to say is, I know there's a problem with it, but there's nothing I can do about it until whatever it is finally blows. I've opened it and can find no evidence of burning on anything. Eventually it will go, I know this and have just accepted it (other than the fact that it scares the hell out of me cause I think something's burning up). If it's working fine with no problems, I would probably just let it go for a while (no ocing it though). It'll probably be fine. When all else fails beat the $%!* out of it!!!

Reply: (edit)From my point of view there is problem with voltage regulating transistors that are usually placed near your CPU and are working overtime. Open the case and check around those transistors (they are soldered on the board and have two pins) for burned area around them, they are usually yellow or brown. And when computer is working they are running very hot so be careful if you try to touch them. Good lack……..
