I'm running a P3 866 with 256mb ram, 64mb Hercules video card and a ATA100 7200rpm hd. I currently have win 2000 installed. The problem is that recently, my computer has been running very slow, like a P 100 or something. I reinstalled win 2000, but the same problem occurs. It is like the system stops responding for a while, then it starts up again. It takes a few seconds to a few minutes to load any program. I'm thinking it is hardware, but I don't know what to look for. Any help would be great.

I just formatted and then re-installed win 2000... there is no need to defrag. And I did install sp2. All updates are installed. I don't think that it is the OS bec it was giving me the same problem with win xp.

you have to defrag. just do an analyse and see how bad it really is. Every time I install 2k and XP its really slow until I run defrag

Is your machine getting too hot? Make sure all of the fans are running - funny noise?

The cpu and mobo temp is fine. The cpu-cache is enabled in the bios.

I just re-partitioned my drive into even smaller parts and I reinstalled win2k. So far it seems to be working fine, but we will see since this is my 6th time reinstalling win2k and winXP. I tore my computer apart and reinstalled every component and checked every bios setting.

I will post with more info when it comes up.
