Subject: Slow computer after CPU upgrade
OS: Win XP SP2
CPU/Ram: Athlon Dual Core 5600+ /2
Model/Manufacturer: Motherboard K9NGM
Comment:
Hi,
Just wondering if someone could help please? I recently purchased 2x1GB DDR2 800Mhz memory sticks and thought I would purchase a new CPU. I bought the Athlon x2 Dual Core 5600+, I am using a quite old motherboard, a MSI K9NGM, after installing the CPU I havn't noticed any performance improvements. Unfortunately I am unable to changed very few settings in the BIOS as not many options are available. I have disable spread spectrum but that hasn't helped. Could the problem be the motherboard?
Any advice on how to resolve the performance issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

"I am using a quite old motherboard"

It's a socket AM2 board...how old can it be??

"Unfortunately I am unable to changed very few settings in the BIOS as not many options are available. I have disable spread spectrum but that hasn't helped"

Spread Spectrum doesn't affect performance...it affects stability. Enabled = less stable, disabled = more stable...especially when overclocking. It doesn't much matter in your case because your board isn't overclockable. Make sure to disable Cool 'n' Quiet too.

I bought the computer about 2 years ago, the 5600+ is about the fastest CPU you can run on this board and I thought the motherboard might be restricting CPU performance somehow.

Cool 'n' Quiet is off, im running an average 37 degrees celcius

The board isn't restricting performance...I just think your expectations are too high.
